Editor's Notes

  • Encourage Tweeting with session hashtag
  • What is long tail? Long tail chart looks different than flow chart? How to decide what to use?
  • Handouts online, we will tweet links throughout
  • Prizes courtesy of FourSquare
  • Now we will find out who actually downloaded the handouts…no peeking!
  • Ask before each one who is using? At end of each one, any successes?
  • CT has a section devoted to nonprofits on its site, even though it’s more widely known for party throwing ventures. This also could be a great tool for smaller organizations who aren’t set up for online giving.
  • House Rabbit Society of Missouri: no-kill, fostering org needed to raise funds for a location. They needed $35k for a down payment … looks like from description they had half of it and turned to CT for the rest. They did well and kept adjusting the goal up, and started a second campaign that is active now for $5k more to ready the Bunny House.
  • Think of it as a virtual corkboard, a way to collect related items and share them with others in a very visual way.Seeing more use of secret boards to share information with volunteers and donors not yet for public consumption.
  • This is Charity:Water’s board for unique fundraising events done for their nonprofit. Again, a great third-party event resource.
  • Here’s a pin from the American Red Cross board on history. This gives a great example of how visual Pinterest is, but still allows for detailed information to be shared in the description and provides a link back to their site for those wishing to learn more.
  • Largest community for sharing presentations. Allows users to download materials, embed in websites and share on social media. In fact, we’ll be sharing this presentation post-conference on our accounts!
  • In addition to sharing the organization’s presentations, the National Wildlife Federation uses the Slideshare account to announce contest winners.
  • Founded much like FB by 2 friends who started it on college campuses, SC was designed for creative photo messaging. Users can draw on snaps, add text and filters. Like the Pinterest secret boards, this could be a way to send out exclusive information to volunteers and donors. Univ. Houston using it to announce contests for students. NOLA Saints also use for contests as well as distribution of video messages from players not distributed on other platforms.
  • 16 Handles yogurt shop was highlighted by Mashable for use of the app to distribute frozen yogurt coupons to customers. At the time we prepped, there wasn’t as much nonprofit adoption, but now Dosomething.org has an account and has begun engaging users.
  • Heard of the Occupy movement? It started via tumblr. Easy to use…their marketing states “30 seconds to join.”
  • Allows for much personalization and customization. Look at the difference between SF ballet and the Philly Museum of Art sites.
  • If you follow Jim Anderson on Twitter, you’ve probably seen a Vine Great for short attention spans. Benefit of Vine versus the competition is that Vine is all videos, IG is mixed so you get both in the same feed. That can deter some users from watching.Examples: Red’s David Guetta endorsement and thank you messages, Unicef event promo
  • Great example of an app designed for another purpose having fundraising applications.Database includes homes that may not be currently on the market. Good compliment to your local tax assessor/collector info, or if you don’t have access to such info for a prospect but know addresses of their property.
  • Provides information about neighboring homes
  • I always thought this kitchen would look great opened up 
  • And now we SHIFT to some apps specifically used in international markets…
  • In our research, we also came across a few apps we thought would be great to recommend for your personal use.
  • Publishing platform that is still in beta testing and requires a Twitter account to apply as a blogger. Open to anyone to read, the idea is to curate ideas versus the management of a blog. “Medium makes no expectation of ongoing commitment.”As the site expands, this could prove useful to organizations wishing to contribute occasional posts on timely issues. In the meantime, it’s useful personally and a helpful feature is the site gives an estimate of how long it takes to read each post.
  • Quora is an online Q&A resource … questions are answered by other users. Can sign up through various platforms, but if you use FB to sign up, it will integrate your likes and friends and produce topics in your feed based on these. An interesting example question recently was about the attention to detail in the Mad Men series. The respondent noted the size of the meals eaten on the show are smaller than today’s meals, which matched up with her childhood memories. The answers are only as good as the respondents, but it is a neat resource for recommendations for travel and perspectives on topics.
