How To Hear

 1. 1.

How To Hear

Luke 8:18 NET So listen carefully, for whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him."

 2. 2. Introduction

The way for Christ was prepared by a preacher,

Matthew 3:1 NET In those days John the Baptist came into the wilderness of Judea proclaiming, 2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."

 3. 3. Introduction

“ Preaching” is from the Greek khruvssw ( kerusso ) which means to proclaim as a herald (a public crier). The message did not originate with the herald, but he was obligated to faithfully proclaim the message given to him.

God could have used other means, but he did not!

 4. 4. Introduction

Salvation is to be preached.

Mark 16:15 NET He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

 5. 5. Introduction

Luke 24:46 NET and said to them, "Thus it stands written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

 6. 6. Introduction

God’s plan for saving man is a preaching plan;

1 Corinthians 1:21 NET For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching.

 7. 7. Introduction

Effective preaching demands responsive hearing as well as a faithful proclamation of the gospel.

 8. 8.

IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

Hearer must help produce powerful preaching.

 9. 9. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

Jesus could not do the job by Himself; Matthew 13:15 NET For the heart of this people has become dull; they are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes,

 10. 10. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. ' 16 “But your eyes are blessed because they see, and your ears because they hear.

 11. 11. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

One today could say, Preacher, you had better make it good;

I have many important things that could engage my thinking.”

 12. 12. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

Some results of placing all the responsibility on the preacher.

Preaching becomes a competitive performance on the part of preachers.

 13. 13. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

This produces envy and jealousy which in turn result in strife.

Efforts sometimes are made to make the pulpit compete with the entertainment world.

 14. 14. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

Sermons, scriptural discourses, are not ends in themselves.

Sermons are not exhibits to be analyzed by curious spectators.

 15. 15. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

They are lessons designed to enlighten, stir, inform and save.

Sermons should, “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”

 16. 16.

EMPHASIS ON HEARING IN THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER.

 17. 17. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

Luke 8:4 NET While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from one town after another, he spoke to them in a parable: 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed.

 18. 18. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled on, and the wild birds devoured it. 6 Other seed fell on rock, and when it came up, it withered because it had no moisture.

 19. 19. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

7 Other seed fell among the thorns, and they grew up with it and choked it. 8 But other seed fell on good soil and grew, and it produced a hundred times as much grain." As he said this, he called out, "The one who has ears to hear had better listen!"

 20. 20. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

9 Then his disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, "You have been given the opportunity to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that although they see they may not see, and although they hear they may not understand .

 21. 21. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

11 “Now the parable means this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the path are the ones who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

 22. 22. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in a time of testing fall away.

 23. 23. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

14 As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

 24. 24. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

15 But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance.

 25. 25. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

16 "No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in can see the light.

 26. 26. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

Nothing was wrong with the seed. Luke 8:11 NET "Now the parable means this: The seed is the word of God.

 27. 27. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

God’s Word is living and powerful; Hebrews 4:12 NET For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart.

 28. 28. IMPORTANCE OF THE HEARER

God’s Word is able to save the soul; James 1:21 NET So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls.

 29. 29.

What Was The Real Problem?

Not the sower, who so often must take the blame.

In this parable the real problem was the hearer.

 30. 30. What Was The Real Problem?

Buttrick has called this parable, “The parable of the soils”

Or

“ The responsibility

of the hearers.”

 31. 31. What Was The Real Problem?

Hearing is urgent business; Luke 8:8 NET But other seed fell on good soil and grew, and it produced a hundred times as much grain." As he said this, he called out, "The one who has ears to hear had better listen!"

 32. 32.

Who are the hearers described and warned in this parable?

Hearer with the shut mind (unteachable).

 33. 33. Hearers Described and Warned

Mind could be closed by pride.

Fear of learning new truth.

Hearer who fails

to think things out.

He does not count the cost.

 34. 34. Hearers Described and Warned

Luke 14:27 NET Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

 35. 35. Hearers Described and Warned

28 For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn't sit down first and compute the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?

 36. 36. Hearers Described and Warned

29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish the tower, all who see it will begin to make fun of him. 30 They will say, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish!'

 37. 37. Hearers Described and Warned

31 Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

 38. 38. Hearers Described and Warned

32 If he cannot succeed, he will send a representative while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.

 39. 39. Hearers Described and Warned

33 In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions.

 40. 40. Hearers Described and Warned

Hearer with excessive

interest in life.

Hearer with a

good and honest heart.

 41. 41.

HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

One should not be:

An indifferent hearer.

 42. 42. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

James 1:19 NET Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.

 43. 43. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

Acts 10:33 NET Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us."

 44. 44. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

A captious (anxious to catch/ trip up others) hearer.

One fond of finding fault, and making objections.

 45. 45. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

Proverbs 5:13 NET For I did not obey my teachers and I did not heed my instructors.

 46. 46. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

A forgetful hearer; James 1:22 NET But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves.

 47. 47. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

23 For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. 24 For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was.

 48. 48. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

25 But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out — he will be blessed in what he does.

 49. 49. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

A hearer with itching ears;

2 Timothy 4:3 NET For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching.

 50. 50. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.

 51. 51. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

4 And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths.

 52. 52. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

One should hear in order to understand.

Luke 8:8 NET But other seed fell on good soil and grew, and it produced a hundred times as much grain." As he said this, he called out, "The one who has ears to hear had better listen!"

 53. 53. HOW SHOULD ONE HEAR?

Ephesians 5:17 NET For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise by understanding what the Lord's will is.

 54. 54.

What One Needs To Do.

Give careful attention to the lesson, in spite of

noise, heat, time, etc.

Strive to overcome

mental laziness.

 55. 55. What One Needs To Do

Strive to analyze the sermon.

What is the aim of the sermon.

What are the main points.

Note taking often helps one keep up with the lesson.

 56. 56. Conclusion

There is a law of action and reaction, “to him that hath shall be given.”

Let the hearer accept

his responsibility in the preaching situation.

 57. 57.

The hearer must obey;

James 1:21 NET So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls.
