Are you recording vocals at home? There is few basic things you should know when recording vocals. Audio recording isn't rocket science but you can very easily screw up your recordings with the wrong techniques. Using the right audio recording techniques is vital especially in home environment and if you're not using top of the line equipment.
6. To get everything out of your
recording equipment there is
few basic things you should
know about recording vocals.
7. ● Mic position in relation to your mouth affects hugely on the
sound of the recording.
● Pointing your mouth slightly below the mic’s recording point
will produce more bass.
● Aiming your mouth a little above the mic’s recording point
will produce more of a nasal-ish sound.
● Simply moving the mic can change the tone of your
recorded vocals, so take the time to find the sweet spot for
your voice.
1. Mic Position
8. ● Standing and recording closer to the microphone will give
you an up front, in-your-face sound.
● Standing farther from the mic will give you a more open and
organic sound.
● If you’re in an acoustically untreated or poorly treated room,
proximity can be very tricky. Stand too far away from the mic
and you will be picking up too much echo from the room.
● If you’re in a treated environment, you’ll have a lot more
freedom on proximity and will be able to stand back farther.
2. Mic Proximity
9. ● Recording volume is not too complicated to get.
● Make sure you’re not recording too hot (too loud), and
definitely make sure you’re not red lining (clipping).
● Watch the meters in your audio recording software and the
meter on your audio interface if it has one.
3. Recording Volume
10. ● The purpose of a pop filter is to block the air flow from your
mouth (that produces pops) from the mic.
● Many individuals are using it much too close to their mouths,
creating esses that can be problematic.
● Generally, the pop filter should be half way between you and
your mic.
4. Pop Filter
11. ● A good performance tops just about everything.
● Do everything in your power to set yourself up for a good
performance.
● Record on a relatively empty stomach so your breath control
will be optimal.
