Introduction to the Philosophy of the
Human Person
Quarter 1 – Module 1: DOING PHILOSOPHY
What is It
I. The Nature and Functions of Philosophy
DEFINITION OF PHILOSOPHY
• Traditionally philosophy is defined as love of wisdom because it came from
two Greek words philos (love) and Sophia (wisdom).
• You might find it strange to connect love to philosophy.
• You might think of philosophy as a purely intellectual discipline which has
nothing to do with love.
• You might believe love is romance, poetry, intense passion in which you are
willing to lay down your life. But you will see that philosophy can also be
pursued passionately.
• In fact some people like Socrates died for truth. It is this centrality of love
to philosophy that we call people who engages in philosophy as
philosophers (lovers of wisdom).
PHILOSOPHICAL ACTIVITY
• Thales greatest contribution to philosophy is not his
identification of water as the ultimate stuff of the
universe.
• His greatest contribution is the problem he posed
“What is the ultimate stuff of the universe?” and his
approach in solving that THALES 12 problem.
• Studying Thales makes us realize that philosophical
activity is characterized by three things:
First in terms of scope philosophy involves the
widest generalizations (Rand, 1982).
• While people concern themselves with shoes and clothes, the latest
gossip about their favorite celebrities, their crushes, philosophers
concern themselves with big issues pertaining to the truth, , the good,
the just, the beautiful, and the existence of practically all things.
• While scientists concern themselves with scientific knowledge,
historians with knowledge of the past, economists with knowledge of
supply and demand, and philosophers concern themselves with the
nature of knowledge as such (which embraces all types of knowledge
previously mentioned and more).
Second philosophy is all about fundamentals.
• A fundamental is the root cause that explains almost everything in a
given context. To understand this imagine that knowledge is like a
building with levels. Now the higher level depends on the lower levels
(Peikoff, 1991).
• If somehow the lower level crumbles then all the higher levels that
rest upon it will collapse. A fundamental is like the lower floor that
supports everything above it.
• That kind of support is exactly what philosophy provides. If somehow
philosophical ideas like consciousness and existence disappear then
knowledge of any kind will not make any sense because there will be
nothing to know (existence) and no one to know (consciousness).
Third philosophy is driven by the desire to
integrate things in to a one coherent whole.
• As the celebrated philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich
Hegel said “The true is the Whole (Peikoff, 1991).”
• If you notice Thales wants to reduce the multiplicity of things
into a single stuff.
• He desires to find the One in the many.
Axiology
• Also referred to as the theory of value, Axiology explores the nature of
value and its metaphysical aspects.
• It is a philosophical study of values and how those values come about in
society.
• Value Theory is often interchangeably used as Axiology and this branch
of Philosophy peruses upon the value of goodness.
• To put it simply, Axiology looks at the concept of value in terms of its
philosophical terms and argues questions about nature and what actually
is valued.
Philosophical Question:
• Para sayo, ano ang pagkakaiba ng mabait sa Mabuti?
Metaphysics
• Metaphysics has been a primary area of philosophical debate. It is mainly
concerned with explaining the nature of being and the world. Traditionally, it
has two different study areas, including Cosmology and Ontology. Cosmology
is focused on understanding the origin, evolution, and the eventual fate of the
universe, which include laws that keep it in perfect order. On the other hand,
Ontology investigates various types of things that exist and their relationship
with each other. Much before the discovery of modern science, all the
science-related questions were asked as a part of Metaphysics.
Philosophical Question:
• Does God and Heaven exist? Prove your answer.
Epistemology
• Another major component of Philosophy is Epistemology. Going back into
history, this term originated from the Greek word episteme which literally
means knowledge, and the other half of the word ‘logy means ‘the study of’.
Basically, it is about the study of knowledge. What can we know? A
fundamental question concerning Epistemology is, what is knowledge? It also
asks questions like, can knowledge ever be absolute? Is there a limit for
humans to know certain things? If we are living in a world of simulation, how
can we know it? These are some of the essential questions Epistemology
seeks answers for.
Philosophical Question:
• May hangganan ba ang kaalaman ng isang tao ?
Ethics
• Everyone in their day to day life tries to conduct themselves according to
some established ethical norms. This philosophical concept has different
applications in a person’s real life. For instance, there are certain
organizations that have ethical committees which lay down rules of behaviour
for its employees. Ethics is concerned with the definition of right and wrong. It
elucidates schools of thought that instruct us how to act in a given situation,
which has always been a matter of contention between philosophers. Every
philosopher has defined it according to their own subjective understanding.
Philosophical Question:
• Para sayo, Kelan nagiging mali ang tama?
Political Philosophy
• Combining the two fields of Politics and Philosophy, Political
Philosophy studies political government, laws, liberty, justice, rights,
authority, political states and systems, ethics, and more.
• It explores the concepts of why we need governments, the role of
played by governments, what are its constituents, amongst others.
Philosophical Question:
• Naniniwala ka bang kailangan ng palitan ang systema ng
gobyerno sa Pilipinas? (Mula Demokratiko patungo sa
Parliamentaryo o iba pa.)
Aesthetics
• Every person defines beauty as per his or her own perspectives. This
philosophical subject is wholly devoted to defining the different aspects of
beauty, even its contours. How do we find something beautiful? Is beauty
always subjective or can it be objective too? Can everyone find a thing
beautiful? It also examines individual taste and attempts to provide answers
about these things in a scientific manner. Aesthetic Philosophy’s primary topic
of investigation is beauty and art. It is often debated inside its classrooms. It
also talks about performing arts like music.
Philosophical Question:
• Is beauty always subjective or can it be objective too?
Logic
• We use this word in our commonplace conversations, so we are all aptly
familiar with it. People constantly ask each other, “where is the logic behind
this or that?”.
• People even acknowledge a good thought or act by calling it logically correct.
• Hence, the question arises, what does Science of logic has to do with
Philosophy? In logic, we usually construct two sentences which are called
premises, and they are used to make a conclusion.
• This sort of logic is called a syllogism, pioneered by Aristotle.
Philosophical Question:
• Naniniwala ka bang lahat ng tanong ay may sagot at lahat ng
sagot ay may paliwanag?

  • 13. Second philosophy is all about fundamentals. • A fundamental is the root cause that explains almost everything in a given context. To understand this imagine that knowledge is like a building with levels. Now the higher level depends on the lower levels (Peikoff, 1991). • If somehow the lower level crumbles then all the higher levels that rest upon it will collapse. A fundamental is like the lower floor that supports everything above it. • That kind of support is exactly what philosophy provides. If somehow philosophical ideas like consciousness and existence disappear then knowledge of any kind will not make any sense because there will be nothing to know (existence) and no one to know (consciousness).
  • 14. Third philosophy is driven by the desire to integrate things in to a one coherent whole. • As the celebrated philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said “The true is the Whole (Peikoff, 1991).” • If you notice Thales wants to reduce the multiplicity of things into a single stuff. • He desires to find the One in the many.

  • 17. Axiology • Also referred to as the theory of value, Axiology explores the nature of value and its metaphysical aspects. • It is a philosophical study of values and how those values come about in society. • Value Theory is often interchangeably used as Axiology and this branch of Philosophy peruses upon the value of goodness. • To put it simply, Axiology looks at the concept of value in terms of its philosophical terms and argues questions about nature and what actually is valued. Philosophical Question: • Para sayo, ano ang pagkakaiba ng mabait sa Mabuti?
  • 18. Metaphysics • Metaphysics has been a primary area of philosophical debate. It is mainly concerned with explaining the nature of being and the world. Traditionally, it has two different study areas, including Cosmology and Ontology. Cosmology is focused on understanding the origin, evolution, and the eventual fate of the universe, which include laws that keep it in perfect order. On the other hand, Ontology investigates various types of things that exist and their relationship with each other. Much before the discovery of modern science, all the science-related questions were asked as a part of Metaphysics. Philosophical Question: • Does God and Heaven exist? Prove your answer.
  • 19. Epistemology • Another major component of Philosophy is Epistemology. Going back into history, this term originated from the Greek word episteme which literally means knowledge, and the other half of the word ‘logy means ‘the study of’. Basically, it is about the study of knowledge. What can we know? A fundamental question concerning Epistemology is, what is knowledge? It also asks questions like, can knowledge ever be absolute? Is there a limit for humans to know certain things? If we are living in a world of simulation, how can we know it? These are some of the essential questions Epistemology seeks answers for. Philosophical Question: • May hangganan ba ang kaalaman ng isang tao ?
  • 20. Ethics • Everyone in their day to day life tries to conduct themselves according to some established ethical norms. This philosophical concept has different applications in a person’s real life. For instance, there are certain organizations that have ethical committees which lay down rules of behaviour for its employees. Ethics is concerned with the definition of right and wrong. It elucidates schools of thought that instruct us how to act in a given situation, which has always been a matter of contention between philosophers. Every philosopher has defined it according to their own subjective understanding. Philosophical Question: • Para sayo, Kelan nagiging mali ang tama?
  • 21. Political Philosophy • Combining the two fields of Politics and Philosophy, Political Philosophy studies political government, laws, liberty, justice, rights, authority, political states and systems, ethics, and more. • It explores the concepts of why we need governments, the role of played by governments, what are its constituents, amongst others. Philosophical Question: • Naniniwala ka bang kailangan ng palitan ang systema ng gobyerno sa Pilipinas? (Mula Demokratiko patungo sa Parliamentaryo o iba pa.)
  • 22. Aesthetics • Every person defines beauty as per his or her own perspectives. This philosophical subject is wholly devoted to defining the different aspects of beauty, even its contours. How do we find something beautiful? Is beauty always subjective or can it be objective too? Can everyone find a thing beautiful? It also examines individual taste and attempts to provide answers about these things in a scientific manner. Aesthetic Philosophy’s primary topic of investigation is beauty and art. It is often debated inside its classrooms. It also talks about performing arts like music. Philosophical Question: • Is beauty always subjective or can it be objective too?
  • 23. Logic • We use this word in our commonplace conversations, so we are all aptly familiar with it. People constantly ask each other, “where is the logic behind this or that?”. • People even acknowledge a good thought or act by calling it logically correct. • Hence, the question arises, what does Science of logic has to do with Philosophy? In logic, we usually construct two sentences which are called premises, and they are used to make a conclusion. • This sort of logic is called a syllogism, pioneered by Aristotle. Philosophical Question: • Naniniwala ka bang lahat ng tanong ay may sagot at lahat ng sagot ay may paliwanag?
