I believe that there is a lot about ethics that is positive and it's time we talked about what we want instead of the 'what not to do' people so often focus on.   • Linda: I have come back to this list several times since first reading it because your individual points re leadership ethics trigger so much productive thought and rich discussion.

    Nonetheless, my hope is that your continuing efforts inspire much more than that. Productive individual and corporate ACTION by leaders and followers is what we all seek.

  • Linda: Ah yes, trends versus 'trendy.'

    These are, of course, great reminders of behavioral shifts to advocate. In context, my contribution is that these behaviors are what has always shaped, always defined broad-based ethical leadership in terms of the focus on benefit to others versus benefit to self over the long term.

    The only downside to labeling these behaviors as 'trends' is that so much of what some people seek is the trending of panacea itself as 'trendy'; acting as though one were ethical versus the holistic 'being' or 'becoming' ethical.

    Ethical leadership has always been and will always be messy. Some ethical decisions are clear and easily made; others are not. The best practitioners will stumble and sometimes fail. Sound ethics is not a guarantee of pain avoidance or failure avoidance and some practitioners will default to their narrower behaviors when ethics does not provide clairvoyance of insight or wholly satisfying outcomes.

    These are long-term, evolving individual and organizational behaviors which must be practiced and lived to be effectively transformative. These days, 'long-term' is itself a difficult contextual ethic to market.

    Ethical behavior(s) themselves are trends which, over the long term, can only be fully appreciated in hindsight, practiced in the present, and bode hope for the future of leadership.
