This document analyzes and summarizes the music video for the song "Chrome Sparks" in several sections:
- The video uses various editing techniques like crossfades, slow motion, and time lapses to represent the complexity of the song and concepts in a visually pleasing way. Shots last less than 2 seconds with constant cutting.
- Locations contrast outside shots of people running in slow motion with cramped indoor shots of people dancing, representing freedom vs confinement. Costumes are mostly white or peach colors from different time periods.
- Through embracing themselves in different eras, the video portrays women as objects of beauty to be watched, though it sexualizes them less than other videos. Combined with

SHOTS
It’s hard to determine the specific type of shot as this
video is a montage/collection of different footage
from different time periods. However, I noticed that
the majority of the shots were either extreme close
ups, or long shots. Additionally, strobe editing was
used to piece together the long shots with the close
ups at every half beat. I found this more visually
interesting to watch, and is something I may do.
Movements/angles I feel are not
significant/applicable in this video, as Chrome Sparks’
video uses a montage of different clips from across
the nation, meaning they had little/no control over
movements and angles. However, unlike Ke$ha/Little
Boots, Chrome Sparks did not feature in their video,
thus suggesting a different purpose for the video –
promoting the music rather than the artist image.
Furthermore, I did notice that the majority of the
shots were physical – women dancing. This links into
Andrew Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism.
4. EDITING
With regards to editing, this video is probably the
most complex I have analysed, with no shot lasting
more than 2 seconds. Crossfades, overlays,
sepia/vintage filters/slow motion and time lapses. I
believe this complex editing was to partly represent
the complexity of the song, aswell as the deeper
concepts and meanings presented within the video.
Furthermore it makes the video more visually
pleasing and interesting to watch. I will ensure to
incorporate some of these effects into my own
video (maybe not a cut on every half beat, though).
Also, I believe the editing was done to reinforce the
concept of Synaesthesia and possibly give the video
a ‘euphoric’ feel to it.
Similar to the other videos I’ve analysed, I believe
these effects were linking to drug use and the
effects that it has on the human brain.
5. MISE EN SCENE
LOCATION
Cohering with Levi’s theory on Binary opposites, the
locations within this video presented the audience
with a visual contrast. There were long shots of
people outside, running/dancing in slow motion
where focus was on the green grass of the foreground
that made the shot. In contrast, there were shots of
people performing dances/speeches, in a cramped
space with lots of people around/watching. The two
ideas were blended together using strobe editing to
the beat, which brought around a sense of realism,
and a binary opposite of ‘free/confined’
LIGHTING
Most of the shots were in black/white or with a sepia
filter so I feel light wasn’t majorly important. However
some shots that were edited together had sufficient
low key/high key lighting, to create contrast.
COSTUME
Costumes used were mostly white/peach colours, and
dated fashion, adding a sense of time to the video.
6. CONCEPT
I believe this video is a conceptual based video, portraying
and combining many important issues and concepts
within the video. Firstly, the filters used on the shots of
the woman jumping I believe creates a ‘paradise’, and this
juxtaposed with the blunts gives a message that ‘weed
will take you to paradise’.
Furthermore, the video largley consists of different
women dancing/embracing in themselves throughout
different time periods. This, along with the
stage/performance locations, further creates voyeurism
and gives the audience an invitation to watch these
women ‘love themselves’. The fact that some shots are
dated suggests that society have always ‘enjoyed
voyeurism’ and the concept of watching people, and this
will never change.
Similar to the other videos, women are presented as
objects of beauty to be looked at, however the Chrome
Sparks video sexualises women less.
Finally, Synaesthesia is present within the video, as the
lyrics “I feel music in your eyes”, is a combination of three
senses, thus the video to this song only reinforces this
concept.
