• Think of words that start with
certain sounds.
• Create sentences made up with
words that all start with the same
sound.
• Play games like hangman and
word search.
Your child’s ability to read, write, listen, and speak is critical for his/her success in
school and life. There are a variety of easy, everyday activities you can do with your
child to improve these skills:
Play Together
Read Together
Talk Together
Online Resources• Read the same words, sentences,
and books multiple times to
increase fluency.
• Have your child read aloud to you,
friends, and family members.
• Read poems and rhyming books.
Make lists of the rhyming words
and make up new poems.
• Look up song lyrics and sing the
song together. Talk about what
the song means to each of you.
• Ask your child questions that can’t
be answered with “yes/no.” Have
them describe and explain things.
• Have your child play “teacher.”
After reading a book, your child
should teach you what he/she
learned.
• Practice identifying letters and
words together.
