Enc 1102 fall 2012 august 21

  1. 1. Welcome to ENC 1102! Tuesday, August 21st
  2. 2. WriteTell me about a time when you struggled to fit in. Why did you struggle? What did you do?
  3. 3. New communities?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBAYiBoy43M Many times, we struggle to “fit in” when we are attempting to join new discourse communities (Swales). We need to adjust to the ways that members of discourse communities talk to each other.
  4. 4. Discourse communitiesRemember this from ENC 1101?Swales’ definition of discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals has mechanisms of intercommunication among its members uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims has its own specific lexis (terminology, jargon) has a threshold level of membership (not anybody can participate)
  5. 5. Basically… Looking at how community members talk to each other may allow you to communicate (or “fit in”) more effectively. These methods of communication can be understood as Genres
  6. 6. Genres
