  3. 3. What is Intercomprehension(IC)?Speakers of languages of the same linguistic group can easily understand a written text andto some extent an oral text, even if they never received formal teaching in that language.Intercomprehension is a social practice documented since the Middle Ages in fairs andmarkets and used as well by travellers and sailors as Columbus reports in his diaries. It’s a form of communication in which each person uses his or her language and understandsthat of the other. It’s a pluralistic approach to language learning and teachingMaddalena De Carlo LINQ 2013 Rome 16-17/5/2013
  4. 4. AdvantagesIC has various advantages, in terms ofLinguistic policies - it gives equal dignity to all languages;Educational - it represents a opportunity for intercultural encounters, because it allows learners to discover languages and cultures theywould not have originally chosen to study;Psychological- Pedagogical : it exploits all the resources of humanknowledge and of the human general interpretative faculty; it buildsnew knowledge upon what learners already know; it reinforces mothertongue competence and offers transferable strategies to otherlanguages.Maddalena De Carlo LINQ 2013 Rome 16-17/5/2013
