This power point is a brief presentation on how to develop strong teams. This presentation is based upon the book entitled Creating the High Performance Team, Steve Buchholz, Thomas Roth (Wilson Learning Corporation); editied by Karen Hess, New York : Wiley, c1987.
2. High Performance Teams
Buchholz, Roth, and Hess in their book
Creating the High Performance Team believe
that there are eight attributes that are evident in
all high-performance teams.

*Creating the High Performance Team, Steve Buchholz, Thomas Roth (Wilson Learning Corporation); editied by Karen Hess, New York : Wiley, c1987. p.176.
3. High Performance Teams (HTP)
The first attribute of HPTs is that of
participative leadership. This attribute creates
an interdependence among team members that
encourages an attitude of empowering, freeing
up, and serving of others.*

4. High Performance Teams
The second attribute of HPTs is that of
“shared responsibility.” This is an attempt to
instill in each team member that the role they
play is as important and valuable as the
leaders of the team.*

5. High Performance Teams
The third attribute of HPTs is an understanding
as to why the team has been brought
together. Having a sense of common purpose
is evident in teams that are successful.*

6. High Performance Teams
Fourth, HPTs have a climate of clear and high
communication. A high-performance team
creates an environment that is based upon trust
and clear and honest communication.*

7. High Performance Teams
Fifth, HPTs are not threatened by change and
growth. In fact the high-performance team sees
a changing future as an opportunity for
growth and expansion. “The behavior of
leaders, the course they steer; the
confidence they inspire, will do more to
influence change than all the tools
and techniques.”*

8. High Performance Teams
The sixth attribute of high-performance teams
is that of keeping a clear focus on the task at
hand. All meetings and the organization of the
group keep their focus upon the ultimate goal.*

9. High Performance Teams
Seventh, a HPT maximizes on the talents of
the team. Any barriers that would hinder the
use of gifts or talents are removed by the
leaders. The use of skills by the individual are
maximized and are encouraged.*

10. High Performance Teams
The eighth attribute of HPTs is that of
practicing a rapid response. This is the skill of
an organization to identify an opportunity and
to act upon it quickly.*

11. A Final Note
There is one fact that cannot be ignored. A
team effort needs to have strong
leadership. This is non-negotiable. Leaders
must lead. The model of team leadership at
the top of the organization is a powerful
influence for positive change!
