What is iconography?What is a ‘westwerk’?A ‘westwerk’ (or westwork) is the monumental, west-facingentrance of a Carolingian, Ottonian, or Romanesque church.The exterior has multiple stories between two towers.The interior includes a chapel, and a series of galleriesoverlooking the nave.In this way, the Emperor or nobility could watch andparticipate in the mas below. The chapel was also used forspecial festivities. Corvey Abbey in Germany (873-875)
