4. Types of Vegetation
•The relief and climatic factors develop different
types of vegetation based on the major forest
types, India has following types of vegetation:
•Tropical evergreen forest
•Tropical deciduous forest
•Tropical thorn forest and scrubs
•Montane forest
•Mangrove forest
5. Tropical Thorn Forest And Scrubs
• 5% of the total forested areas
• Annual rainfall is less than 70cm.
• Found in north western part of the country
• Ex: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Madhya
Pradesh as well as some parts of Deccan plateau.
• Trees:
Acacia palm euphorbia, cactus.
Animals:
Fox, wolf, rat, mice, horses, tiger, lion, camels.
6. Characteristics Of Tropical Thorn Forests
• The trees found in tropical thorn forests are scattered.
• The plants found here has long roots, succulent stems and small thick
leaves.
• All these characteristics is developed to minimize evaporation and
conserve moisture.
• Only scrube are found in desert areas with least rainfall.
13. Montane Forests
• These forests cover about 17% of the total forested areas of
India.
• Found in mountainous areas
Ex: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand,
Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh.
• Natural vegetation changes with change in altitude.
• These succession of natural vegetation is in the order from
tropical to tundra vegetation.
