Don’t just buy, know how to sell

  1. 1. Don’t just buy, know how to sell
  2. 2. The art of selling • As a long term investor, we accumulate stocks. We buy and then forget about it until many years later. • We inherently believe that even if the markets fall in the short term, they will gain five or ten years down the line. • Patience is a virtue in an investor. But, it is also important to sell. • Here are a few things to know:  It hits your price targets  The stock’s fundamentals change  Market deteriorates
  3. 3. It hits your price targets • Don’t get greedy. There is a reason analysts give price targets over various investment horizons, even long term. Experts analyze the financial health of the company, the past performance of the stock and the trends of the share price. Based on these, analysts predict the maximum and minimum levels of the stock price. • Once a stock crosses the target price, it is not likely to rise much. As a result, you can make the maximum profits by selling the stock at this level. However, check if the price target has been revised.
  4. 4. The stock’s fundamentals change • Companies work within the country’s overall economic and political spheres. Any changes in these environments thus affect companies and their profitability. • For example, a new law which bars companies from importing a certain component and rely on domestic suppliers instead, may change its profitability. This means, the stock’s fundamentals have changed. This is likely to have an impact on the stock’s returns. It may then be wise to sell before the stock price falls further.
  5. 5. Market deteriorates • The stock market goes through phases of bear and bull cycles. This means, for a certain period, it will keep rising or falling. This is often because of positive or negative factors that impact companies across sectors and industries. • For example, the 2008 financial crisis in the US dragged stock markets lower across the world. It has taken seven years for the stock markets to regain the same levels. During such time, it may be worthwhile to reconsider the stocks in your portfolio and sell the laggards.
