  1. 1. Welcome! Faculty of Library and Information Science University of Barcelona
  2. 2. A little bit of history <ul><li>In 1915 the Catalan government planned a public library network. At the same time, it also founded a School of Library and Information Science, initially only for women. </li></ul><ul><li>Since 1915 this institution has continuously provided professional education to Catalan librarians. In the meantime, the School has changed of holder and location in the city several times. </li></ul><ul><li>Until 1983, LIS studies were not recognised as a university degree in Spain, so this School was a quite unique case until then. </li></ul>

Our degrees <ul><li>At present, LIS studies are structured into three levels: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Undergraduate program (3 years full time): “Diplomatura”. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Postgraduate program (2 years full time, after a first degree in any subject): “Llicenciatura”. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>PhD program: “Doctorat”. </li></ul></ul>

Adaptation to the Bologna process <ul><li>We already have 2 masters adapted to the European Higher Education Area: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Since 2006: Digital Content Management (1.5 years). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Since 2008: School Libraries and Reading Promotion (1 year). </li></ul></ul><ul><li>In September 2009 we will start offering our undergraduate degree adapted to the European Higher Education Area. </li></ul>
  5. 5. “ La Diplomatura” (undergraduate) <ul><li>Its aim is to educate technical staff for all the duties related to information management: identifying information sources, evaluating them, cataloguing, indexing, classifying, information retrieval, promotion, and so on. </li></ul><ul><li>Graduates work in all kind of libraries, archives, private companies, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Main subjects are: Cataloging and Classification; Information Sources and Services; Information Technology; Library Management; Online Information Retrieval; Preservation and Conservation; Records Management; and a work placement during the third year of the degree. </li></ul>
  6. 6. “ La Llicenciatura” (postgraduate) <ul><li>Its aim is to educate staff responsible for managing information units. </li></ul><ul><li>Main subjects are: Resource and Service Administration in Information Units; Planning and Evaluation of Information Systems; Information Technologies: Database design and administration; Advanced systems of information retrieval; Knowledge Representation Systems; Indexing and summary techniques; Specialized documentation; Project Management. </li></ul><ul><li>Students can enrol this program: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Directly if having the “diplomatura”. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>After taking some additional courses if they do not have the “diplomatura”. </li></ul></ul>

Master in Digital Content Management <ul><li>Master degree adapted to the EHEA. </li></ul><ul><li>Admission requirements are having a University Diploma or a University Degree. </li></ul><ul><li>Main subjects are: Legal and Technical Aspects of Content Distribution; Evaluation and Selection of Digital Contents; Users and Information Use Assessment; Content Management Systems, Markup Languages; Information Organization and Representation; Interface Visualization and Interaction; Information Indexing and Retrieval; Digital Projects Management. </li></ul>

Students <ul><li>We offer courses all day long, so students can study and work. </li></ul><ul><li>About 800 students are enrolled in our programmes: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>128 students enrolled in the Diplomatura last September. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>68 students enrolled in the Llicenciatura last September. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>24 students enrolled in the Master of Digital Contents Management. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>About 35 students are enrolled in the PhD program. </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. Faculty <ul><li>About 70 lecturers teach in our programs. </li></ul><ul><li>About half of them are professionals who work in all kind of information units and teach part-time. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Facilities <ul><li>A library specialised in LIS with 15,000 volumes and 300 current journals. </li></ul><ul><li>3 computer labs with 25 PCs each. </li></ul>
