What is Corruption ?
 Corruption means doing something illegal, not
acceptable to society. This could be giving or
accepting bribe, cheating or defrauding. It exist
because people unknowingly supports it. They may
not participate in it but will not raise their voice
against it so it continues to exist. Corruption exist
in business, education, government offices and
even social institutions.
Common factors of Corruption
 A business individual pays a bribe to a government official
in order to be given a government contract or license
 A government official takes advantage of his or her
position to favor a family member or business associate
for a job or tender contract. This is commonly called
nepotism.
 A police officer try to obtain bribe or a member of the
public offers one in order to escape lawful punishment.

 Lack of respect for rulers

Most corrupted countries
 Somalia, South Sudan, North Korea and Syria are perceived to be the most
corrupt countries in the world, according to Transparency International's latest
annual review that draws on a mix of business and government sources for its
rankings.
 Somalia has held the undesirable title as the world's most corrupt country for the
past ten years, with a score of 10 on the Corruption Perceptions Index 2016,
which ranks countries' public sector from zero to 100.
 Countries with a lower score are considered to be more corrupt, and are
generally characterized by impunity for corruption, poor governance and weak
institutions, the report said.
 Second from the bottom is South Sudan, a relatively new country which only
gained its independence from Sudan six years ago, with a score of 11. The third
most corrupt country is North Korea, followed by Syria, a war-torn country which
is presently seeing a massive outflow of refugees.
Corruption in India
 India is the 79 least corrupt nation out of 175 countries, according to
the 2016 Corruption Perceptions Index reported by Transparency
International. Corruption Rank in India averaged 75.32 from 1995 until 2016,
reaching an all time high of 95 in 2011 and a record low of 35 in 1995.
 Corruption is widespread in India.
 In 2014 India ranked 85th out of 174 countries
in Transparency International's Corruption perceptions
Index.
 In India found that more than 54% of Indians had firsthand
experience of paying bribes to successfully get jobs done
in public offices.
 The largest sources of corruption in India are:
1) entitlement programmes and
2) social spending schemes enacted
by the Indian government.

 A bribe is a payment given personally to a government official
in exchange of his use of official powers.

 In December 2009 it was reported
that 120 out of 532 parliament
members were accused of crime.
 Scandals involved high level
government officials, including
Cabinet ministers and Chief
ministers across the country.
Corruption in Health
 In Government Hospitals, corruption is associatedwith non-
availability/duplication of medicines, getting admission, consultations
with doctors and availing diagnostic services.
 National rural Health Mission programme - one of the largest source
of corruption.
Corruption in Judiciary
 Corruption is unwelcomed in India’s courts
 Factors such as - delays in the disposal of cases, shortage
of judges and complex procedures
 Bribe collected by the judiciary -36%
 Corruption threatens equal
access, quantity and quality of
education.
 Corruption has long-term effects.
 It includes bribes paid by parents
to teachers to ensure good grades
and examination results bribes
paid by teachers to public officials
to get preferred posting and
promotion etc.

Conclusion
 Corruption is an intractable problem. It is
like diabetes, can only be controlled, but
not totally eliminated. It may not be
possible to root out corruption completely
at all levels but it is possible to contain it
within tolerable limits.

  • 2. What is Corruption ?  Corruption means doing something illegal, not acceptable to society. This could be giving or accepting bribe, cheating or defrauding. It exist because people unknowingly supports it. They may not participate in it but will not raise their voice against it so it continues to exist. Corruption exist in business, education, government offices and even social institutions.

Common factors of Corruption  A business individual pays a bribe to a government official in order to be given a government contract or license  A government official takes advantage of his or her position to favor a family member or business associate for a job or tender contract. This is commonly called nepotism.  A police officer try to obtain bribe or a member of the public offers one in order to escape lawful punishment.

Most corrupted countries  Somalia, South Sudan, North Korea and Syria are perceived to be the most corrupt countries in the world, according to Transparency International's latest annual review that draws on a mix of business and government sources for its rankings.  Somalia has held the undesirable title as the world's most corrupt country for the past ten years, with a score of 10 on the Corruption Perceptions Index 2016, which ranks countries' public sector from zero to 100.  Countries with a lower score are considered to be more corrupt, and are generally characterized by impunity for corruption, poor governance and weak institutions, the report said.  Second from the bottom is South Sudan, a relatively new country which only gained its independence from Sudan six years ago, with a score of 11. The third most corrupt country is North Korea, followed by Syria, a war-torn country which is presently seeing a massive outflow of refugees.

Corruption Rank in India averaged 75.32 from 1995 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 95 in 2011 and a record low of 35 in 1995.

  • 18. Conclusion  Corruption is an intractable problem. It is like diabetes, can only be controlled, but not totally eliminated. It may not be possible to root out corruption completely at all levels but it is possible to contain it within tolerable limits.
