INTRODUCTION
The proving began February 2004 in Auroville, an
international township formed for spiritual and ecological
reasons in South West India by The Mother, a spiritual
teacher, who worked closely with Sri Aurobindo in Pondi-
cherry. Dr. Nandita Shah and Melissa Burch, CCH, were
beginning to use methods of casetaking to explore the
possibility of having the patient reveal the qualities of the
substance they require. One patient described the charac-
teristics of the sea anemone.
After a difficult search, the manager of a government research
center told the supervisor, “You’ve got me by the throat,” and
then instructed her where she could find someone who sells
sea anemones a few blocks away. The specimen came from
the Indian Ocean and was retrieved from a collector of sea
anemones in Chennai. A small tentacle of the Stoichactis
Kenti was cut off and triturated. The animal was not killed but
slightly injured.
Dr. Susanne Sieben arrived shortly after the remedy was made
up at the pharmacy and so a proving was organized during her
stay in Auroville. None of the supervisors knew the exact
proving substance, since there were several unmarked
possibilities.

Many significant and unusual events were happening for
Auroville during this time. The first Aurovillian was mur-
dered in 30 years a week before the proving began. Three of
the provers were initiators of a new psychiatric intervention
group, and three Aurovillians had psychotic episodes that
required hospitalization. One supervisor was involved with a
kidnapping that was initiated by the boyfriend of the victim.
These events were only background experiences to the prov-
ing, however, the themes of making boundaries and not
letting other people affect you, and a sense of righteousness
permeated many of the provers’ experiences.

SEA ANEMONE SOURCE INFORMATION

Other names:
Stichodactyla gigantea, Discosoma giganteum, Priapus
giganteus, Carpet anemone, Gigantic sea anemone, Giant
carpet anemone, Anémone tapis, Patchy giant anemone.
Diagnostic field characters:
Deeply-folded oral disc (rarely grows to 500 mm diameter),
covered with short slightly tapering tentacles (average 10
mm), that typically all vibrate constantly. Tentacles are
extremely sticky in life, adhering to collector's hand, and
pulling off in clumps; but do not cause stinging sensation.

They are often found lying in shallow waters, where the
animals may be exposed at low tide.
Details:
The Stoichactis Kenti can be found in abundance in certain
locations. The oral disc usually lies on the surface of the sand,
among corals; their pedal disc attached to a buried object.
Non-adhesive verrucae on the upper column is blue to maroon
in color, contrasting with yellowish, pinkish, tan, greenish-
blue, or gray-green column. Basal portion of each tentacle of
the oral disc is often tan or pink; the color of the bluntly
pointed distal part, which is what is generally noted as the
tentacle color is commonly brown or greenish, rarely a
striking purple or pink, deep blue, or bright green. Much of
the central oral disc is bare, but the deep oral disc folds may
hide its mouth.
Similar species:
The shallow and sandy habitat is unusual for sea anemones.
Stichodactyla mertensii, which lives on hard substrata, has a
flat oral disc and distinctive column. Stichodactyla haddoni
typically lives in cleaner sand and deeper water, and its oral
disc folds are more regular and separate than those of
Stoichactis Kenti. The tentacle form and fish symbionts of the
other sea anemones also distinguish them apart.
Distribution:
Micronesia to the Red Sea, and Australia to the Ryukyu
Islands.

Classification:
Sea anemones are invertebrates, or animals lacking back-
bones, in contrast with fishes, which are vertebrates. Over
95% of all the kinds of animals in the world are invertebrates,
most of them insects.
Sea anemones belong to the phylum known as Cnidaria or
Coelenterata. All Cnidarians have cnidae or nematocysts,
specialized stinging cells. They have a single body cavity that
serves as stomach, lung, intestine, circulatory system, and
everything else. There is one opening (the mouth) into this
cavity, through which all water, food, and gametes pass in and
out. It is surrounded by a few or many tentacles, finger-like or
filamentous projections which are usually studded with nema-
tocysts. They are active in capturing food and transferring it
to the mouth, and may be used defensively, too.
Sea anemones are members of the Anthozoa class, which also
includes hard and soft corals. They live attached to firm ob-
jects, generally the sea floor, or embedded in its sediments.
An anemone's mouth points generally away from the substra-
tum, and is surrounded by relatively short tentacles. Unlike
most other anthozoans, sea anemones lack skeletons of any
sort and are solitary. Other anthozoans, such as corals, com-
monly exist as colonies, with many anemone-like individuals
attached to one another. Each cylindrical individual is called a
polyp. Members of the other three Cnidarian classes may exist
as non-motile polyps or as free swimming medusae—like the
jellyfish, which is simply an upside down polyp lacking a
skeleton, free to swim in the open sea, with somewhat
lengthened tentacles.

Cnidarians are carnivores that stun their prey with stinging
cells loaded with nematocysts. These stinging cells are
activated through a simple neural net, and biologists are
studying Cnidarians for insight into how the nervous system
evolved.
Identifying Sea Anemones:
A sea anemone is an extremely simple animal. It may be
thought of as a cylinder that is closed at both ends. The lower,
or pedal, end may be pointed for digging into soft sediments.
Most anemones have a pedal disc, which attaches firmly to a
solid object like a coral branch or rock (often buried in sedi-
ment). In the center of the oral disc, at the opposite, unat-
tached end is the mouth. Hollow tentacles, arising from the
oral disc, surround it. They may be few or many, and arrayed
in radial rows or in circlets. Their form is highly diverse—
short or long, thin or thick, pointed or blunt, globular or tree-
like. Tentacle number, form and arrangement are very
important in distinguishing genera and species. The
cylindrical column (body) of Anthozoans is not completely
hollow.
In sea anemones, vertical partitions (mesenteries) extend from
the column wall across the central space part or all of the way
to the throat (actinopharynx). Viewed in cross-section, the
column resembles a wheel with spokes. Mesenteries also
attach on the underside of the oral disc (the radiating lines of
attachment may be visible in an animal that is well expanded,
has few tentacles, and/or has a thin oral disc), and tentacles
arise between them.

In animals with few tentacles, much of the oral disc, the
mouth and sometimes even the upper end of the throat into
which the mouth opens, are visible. The disc can be radially
or circularly patterned; the mouth, which can be circular or
elongate, may be elevated on a conical projection and may
differ in color from the oral disc.
The column is appropriately tapered to accommodate a pedal
and/or oral disc of smaller or greater diameter than itself. In
most species the oral disc is much broader than the column.
The column, which may be patterned (commonly splotches of
color or longitudinal stripes), can also bear specialized struc-
tures along part or all of its length. For example, some trop-
ical anemones (but none that host clownfishes) have branched
projections from the lower column. Most sea anemones have,
in the upper part, longitudinal rows of small warts or verrucae
to which particles of gravel may adhere; commonly these are
pigmented differently from the rest of the column.

Sea anemones are sessile or stationary organisms; generally,
if an anemone moves it is very slowly by creeping along its
substrate. They attach their single sticky foot to a rock in the
intertidal zone or shallow water and remain there, catching
unsuspecting fish with their tentacles. While the anemone
waits for prey it looks like a beautiful open flower, tentacles
swaying in the current. However, as soon as the tentacles
sense a fish, the nematocysts fire, and the tentacles contract
bringing the prey toward the anemone's mouth.
The sea anemones may also close and keep their tentacles
shut, so that it is harder for birds or other predators to get to
their internal parts. If they live in an intertidal zone, where
they are exposed to air during low tide, they may shut down
for protective measures to prevent excess water loss.
Some sea anemones can expose two different kinds of
tentacles. During the daylight, these anemones expose organs
on which the symbiotic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) live,
and at night the nematocyst-bearing tentacles are present.
Perhaps this suggests that sunlight acts as cue for opening and
closing. Anemones tentacles do not respond only to the pres-
ence or absence of prey, but the anemone appears to exhibit
spontaneous movement also. It can expose some or all of its
tentacles, and shorten or lengthen its base. This blebbing type
of movement is made possible by a hydrostatic skeleton that
uses water pressure to move ciruclar and longitudinal muscle
fibers.

Hydrostatic skeletons consist of fluid filled closed chamber,
in which internal pressures generated by muscle contractions
cause movement as well as maintain the shape of animals
such as sea anemones and worms. The sea anemone has one
set of longitudinal muscles in the outer layer of the body, and
a layer or circular muscles in the inner layer of the body. The
anemone can elongate or contract its body by contracting one
of the other sets of muscles.
Presence or absence of verrucae is a character defining
genera. Thus, all species in a particular genus do (e.g.
Stoichactis kenti) or do not (e.g. Entacmaea) have verrucae.
Arrangement of tentacles is also important in defining genera.
There may be one tentacle per space between mesenteries (so
that the number of tentacles equals the number of mesenteries
attaching to the oral disc), or there may be more than one ten-
tacle between each two mesenteries. Members of the family
Actiniidae have one tentacle per space. Anemones of the
families Stichodactylidae and Thalassianthidae can have
many tentacles per space.
Sea anemone color pattern can be important for field iden-
tification, but color itself is highly variable in most actinians
or sea anemones, and is of little diagnostic value. Symbiotic
algae may affect anemone color, either by imparting their own
golden brown color, or by stimulating the animal to produce a
pigment that protects the algae against excessive sunlight.
Therefore, anemones often blend in with corals and with sand,
explaining how such large animals may be so difficult to
detect in nature.

Feeding:
Sea Anemones are not plants but predatory animals. The sting
capsule in the tentacles and other parts of the sea anemone
each contain a coiled hollow filament, usually barbed and
containing poison. They are used to catch smaller organisms,
for defense and to fight territorial battles. These capsules can
be seen under the microscope and their mechanism is argu-
ably the fastest action in the whole of the animal kingdom.
When triggered by touch, the capsule turns inside out and
drives the filament into its prey discharging its venom.
The tentacles manipulate the food to the single opening for
digestion. Wastes are expelled through the same opening. Sea
anemones breathe through the general body surface. There are
no special organs.
Frequently the anemones will be hidden in crevices or con-
cealed in narrow fissures. They are not attempting to hide but
choosing the best feeding station. A considerable part of their
diet is borne by the movement of the tides, and their powers
of movement are usually limited to judiciously creeping into a
spot where they can obtain sustenance from the ebb and flow
of the waters. In winter when planktonic organisms are
scarce, some anemones have to endure months of poor
nourishment and even starvation, when they will dwindle to
a fraction of their summer size. They are also able to loosen
their adherent base, and allow the tides and currents to propel
them to a different location. In aquaria they will clamber over
the glass sides.

Capture of Prey:
The tentacles and beads contain stinging organs called cnida
of which the nematocysts are the most important. These
tentacles will extend in an active search for small prey. The
anemones will also alter their shape of the column when the
isolated sense cells detect the presence of food, whether it is
plankton or organic remains. The anemone then fires a
poisoned barb (nematocysts) to paralyze small organisms.
Prawns have evolved to resist the entrapment of the tentacles
and can normally break free from the stinging tentacles, and
most rock pool fish will quickly dart away at the touch of a
tentacle. Free swimming creatures may wander into the sea
anemone tentacles in still waters, but it is unlikely. When the
incoming tide cascades over the pool, various small fish and
prawns are stimulated to move and are easier prey for the sea
anemone.
After a large item of food has been dispatched down its
tubular gullet, the anemone may contract for a period of up to
one hour. Afterwards, it will expand to its fullest extent while
it completes its digestion process. Days later, the remains will
be expelled through its mouth, sometimes wrapped up in a
glutinous discharge.
Symbiotic Relationships:
Anemones have stinging cells in their tentacles that are
avoided by most fish, but clownfish develop a protective body
mucus that allows them to swim among the tentacles without
being stung. The clownfish derive shelter and protection from
predators from this association. In turn, the clownfish protect

their host anemone from butterfly fish and other predators that
eat anemones, and they keep the anemone free of dirt and
debris.
The clownfish, in return, will feed the anemone, grabbing
small pieces of food and placing them gently by the
anemone's mouth. Clowns and anemones often form a fairly
strong pair-bond and the clown will attack any other clown
(save its mate) that tries to live in their private anemone. They
even sleep nestled in their anemone, and they lay their eggs
on a rock surface at the base of their host anemone.
Predators:
Sea anemones are probably distasteful to most fish and are
largely ignored by crabs. However, the Hairy Crabs, Pilumnus
hirtellus, will dig up anemones, and the Tompot Blennies,
Parablennius gattorugine, which are shallow water fish, will
attack and sometimes eat them. The Grey Sea Slug, Aeolidia
papillosa, feeds exclusively on sea anemones. Many species
of the sea slug that eat anemones manage it without activating
their prey’s stinging cells. Some species do not digest the
stinging cells (nematocysts), but absorb them intact, store
them in their back, and later utilize them for the sea slug’s
own defense.
Sea Anemone Toxins:
The Indo Pacific sea anemone, Stoichactis kenti, produces a
cytolytic toxin (kentin) which is a basic polypeptide of molec-
ular weight approximately 18,000. It broadly resembles cyto-
toxins from the Stoichactis helianthus (helianthin), as well as
similar toxins from a number of other anemones, namely Con-

dylactis, Epiactis, Actinia, Pseudactinia, Tealia, Anthopleura,
Radianthus and Gyrostoma.
These animals possess specialized structures with tentacles
that contain a wide variety of toxins, which are used in the
capture of prey, as well as for defense against predators.
Among these toxins, the peptides that act by binding to the
ionic channels, especially to the voltage-gated sodium chan-
nels, are the substances most extensively studied and char-
acterized.
These toxic sea anemone peptides may act predominantly as
cardiac stimulants or as neurotoxins according to the degree
of affinity with the isoforms of cardiac or neuronal sodium
channels. The pharmacological effects of some anemone pep-
tides on the nervous system have also been studied.
Studies with some sea anemone toxins, like granulitoxin, the
neurotoxic peptide from the sea anemone Bunodosoma gra-
nulifera have produced seizures in rats. The Stoichactis kenti
cytolic toxin, kentin, has proved to have the effect of a central
stimulant on mouse brain monoamines producing fighting
behavior. However, still with respect to the pharmacological
effects on the central nervous system, no electroencephalo-
graphic (EEG) studies have been conducted thus far using sea
anemone peptides.

REMEDY RELATIONSHIPS
There is a close relationship to Sepia, with the hormonal
problems, low libido, menses affected, skin rashes, tiredness,
and antagonism with partner. However, the sea anemone
seems to have a softer and more gentle quality, easily affected
by the suffering of children, childhood and nostalgia.
The themes of dirt, exploitation, prostitution and feeling
handicapped indicate the Leprosy miasm.
This remedy has a strong affinity with cold symptoms,
accidents, and skin rashes.
Spongia tosta, Corrallium rubrum, Asteria rubens and Fucus
vesiculosis are related sea remedies to further differentiate.

PROVERS
The supervisors are from three countries, India, Germany and
United States. There were eight provers, who were from Ger-
many, Holland, France and India. English is a second lan-
guage for all the provers, although they use it daily in
Auroville.
The supervisors’ symptoms are included in the proving even
though they never took the remedy (indicated by 01S, 02S or
03S next to the symptom). The symptoms and observations
from the trituration are also included (indicated by T next to
the symptom).

I had sudden desire to rest, retreat, and feel sleepy. The desire
is to be in the dark and just close the eyes. The pain of
the bones in the maxillas became more intense, heavy,
sore, and then invaded the whole shell, then draws up as
if somebody is pulling your whole head up. Or like you
are pulling up a sweater with a collar, pulling up, pull-
ing up with something heavy and dark like a heavy dark
shadow or cloud. It is concentrated and focused on the
top of the head chakra and leaves through there like an
upward chimney. It leaves this shadow and then all feels

I feel very wobbly, more internally than externally, nothing
can help it. I might just collapse any moment. I have to

Several months after the proving, one prover spoke about her
ability to not get overly involved with patients, which had
been a problem in the past. She said, “I find I am much more
quiet and harmonious. This is different. I respond differently
instead of reacting. I am more concentrated. I am very organ-
ized, feel much better and don’t feel lost in a lot of things.”
