How it began… <ul><li>The Fourteen Points </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A list of American goals for the world to follow after the war. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Wanted all claims to land/territory to be adjusted fairly </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Wanted all rights of individual nations to be preserved </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Wanted to form a League of Nations to handle international disputes </li></ul></ul>

Peace Conference <ul><li>Held at Versailles, France </li></ul><ul><li>France and Great Britain wanted to punish Germany for the war </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Wanted German territory for themselves </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Resulted in the Treaty of Versailles </li></ul><ul><ul><li>See handout </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Created poverty, unrest, hatred, etc. that will lead to WWII </li></ul></ul>

U.S. Refusal to sign <ul><li>U.S. Senate refused to allow the U.S. To join the League of Nations </li></ul><ul><li>After WWI most Americans were wanting to return to their former policy of isolationism </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Not getting involved in European affairs </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Wilson wanted to join, and spent the remainder of his term trying to convince American to join the peace organization </li></ul><ul><li>The U.S. Senate's refusal to sign is what caused the League to be ineffective. </li></ul>
  6. 6. American Isolationism <ul><li>Throughout the 1920's and 1930's the U.S. Will continue its policy of isolationism. </li></ul><ul><li>Only involved with trade and economic issues </li></ul><ul><li>How do you think this will affect European affairs in the 20's/30's? </li></ul>
