Number sense can refer to an “intui1ve” understanding of numbers, their magnitude, rela1onships, and how they are affected by opera1ons.
2011 research on Number Sense (2 studies: Univ. of Missouri & Johns Hopkins Univ.) • A preschooler’s grasp of numbers predicts math performance in school years • Early number sense is linked to formal math achievement (test scores) • 1st graders that understand numbers, the quanGGes those numbers represent, and low level arithmeGc will have beIer success in learning mathemaGcs through the end of 5th grade • Number Sense correlates with math tests scores through high school
Number Sense is not just… • CounGng • Knowing basic facts (+, ‐, x, /) • ComputaGonal fluency • StaGng place value
Number Sense is more deeply about… • Comparing, ordering, and equality • Composing and decomposing numbers • Reasonableness, esGmaGon, reasoning • Internalizing value, magnitude, and base 10
