This lesson is designed to reinforce: SOL 4.2 Virginia Geography <ul><li>In order to meet this standard, the student will demonstrate knowledge of the geography and early inhabitants of Virginia by: </li></ul><ul><li>locating Virginia and its bordering states on maps of the United States </li></ul><ul><li>locating and describing Virginia’s Tidewater, Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau </li></ul>

  4. 4. Who borders Virginia? North Carolina Tennessee Kentucky West Virginia Maryland
  5. 5. How about those Virginia Regions! Tidewater Piedmont Blue Ridge Mountain Valley and Ridge Appalachian Plateau
  6. 6. Tidewater Region <ul><li>Coastal Plain is another term for the Tidewater Region </li></ul><ul><li>Flat land </li></ul><ul><li>It’s located near the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay </li></ul><ul><li>It includes the Eastern Shore </li></ul><ul><li>It is East of the Fall Line </li></ul>
  7. 7. Piedmont Region <ul><li>Named for “land at the foot of the mountain” </li></ul><ul><li>It has rolling hills </li></ul><ul><li>It is west of the Fall Line </li></ul>
  8. 8. Blue Ridge Mountain Region <ul><li>The mountains are old and rounded </li></ul><ul><li>They are part of the Appalachian mountain system </li></ul><ul><li>It is located between the Piedmont and Valley and Ridge Regions </li></ul><ul><li>It is the source of many rivers </li></ul>
  9. 9. Valley and Ridge Region <ul><li>Includes the Great Valley of Virginia and other valleys separated by ridges </li></ul><ul><li>It is part of the Appalachian Mountain System </li></ul><ul><li>It is located west of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range </li></ul>
  10. 10. Appalachian Plateau Region <ul><li>It is located in Southwest Virginia </li></ul><ul><li>It is well known for its coal supply </li></ul>
  11. 11. Label each of Virginia’s 5 regions. Draw an arrow from each region and name at least two important facts about the geography of that region.
