2. 2. What is Honesty ? Can we justify the limit of Honesty on each levels of need ?

The Thorndike-Banhart

dictionary defines honesty as

“ fairness, uprightness, truthfulness…to be honest is to be real, genuine, and authentic.”

Honesty expresses both self-respect and respect for others.

Honesty is the human quality of communicating and acting truthfully related to truth as a value. This includes listening, and any action in the human repertoire — as well as speaking.

 3. 3. MASLOW HIERARCHY NEEDS Can we justify the limit of Honesty on each levels of need ?
 4. 4. LEVEL 1: Can we justify the limit of Honesty on ‘Physiological’ level of need ?

CASE - I

Ramu (labour) earn Rs.65 daily.

He did some mistake

If he accepts he will lose his job

If he deniess he can secure his job, thus continue earning

 5. 5. LEVEL 2: Can we justify the limit of Honesty on ‘Security’ level of need ?

CASE - II

Ritesh (MBA) works in an MNC

He has a sales target to achieve

Deadline near, nowhere close to the target

He has an option to bribe the local dealer and achieve his target, because he thinks honesty has no returns.

Or remain honest and lose his target

 6. 6.

CASE - III

Amit and Raj are close friends.work in the same company.

Amit is his supervisor.

Raj commits a mistake that leads to substantial loss for company.

The GM tells Amit to submit an enquiry report? What should Amit do?

LEVEL 3: Can we justify the limit of Honesty on ‘affiliation’ level of need ?
 7. 7. LEVEL 4: Can we justify the limit of Honesty on ‘Esteem’ level of need ?

CASE - IV

Four heroes nominated for a ‘prestigious’ award

Everyone have equal chance of winning.

Salpan Khan has to win desperately.

Options- bribe the jury or honestly compete.

 8. 8. LEVEL 5: Can we justify the limit of Honesty on ‘Self Actualization’ levels of need ?

CASE – V

Mr.Ratan Tata, CEO, Tata Group is planning to launch a Rs 1 Lac Car.

He believes, land acquired by govt. has been not done using any unethical means or by force

Gives statement, “we will back off from the project, if it proves unethical means were used”

 9. 9. MASLOW HIERARCHY NEEDS Can we justify the limit of Honesty on each levels of need ?

For each business and profession, ultimately there are certain values which are adopted and honored because without such coherence of values, it is not possible to have orderly, smooth and positive developments

The importance of values in business is also underlined by the increasing emphasis on corporate governance. This is an index of the increasing awareness about the need for having a proper moral, value and ethical framework for taking decisions in business.

Transparency is needed because the next important value in business is accountability. Once the system is transparent, accountability can readily be fixed because responsibility for decisions and action taken are known.

In this era of intense global competition, is honesty still the best policy?
 10. 10.

That brings us finally to the question of what is the accountability for? This is related to value added to the stakeholders. For example, in the case of investors it is return on investment and for customers, quality of goods and services and so on.

CONTINUED……..
 11. 11.

Purpose : The mission of an organization is communicated from the top. An organization is guided by the values, hopes and a vision that helps to determine what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior.

Pride : Employees feel proud of themselves and of their organization. They know that when we feel this way, we can resist temptations to behave unethically.

Patience : They believe that holding to our ethical values will lead them to success in the long term. This involves maintaining a balance between obtaining results and caring how they achieve these results.

Persistence : They have commitment to live by ethical principles. They are committed to their commitment. they make sure their actions are consistent with their purpose.

Perspective : Managers and employees take time to pause and reflect, take stock of where they are, evaluate where they are going and determine how they are going to get there.

HOW AN ORGANIZATION CAN FOLLOW HONESTY?
