Thesis
Achieving equitable design and policy standards for
environmental and economic sustainability in the
E. Santa Clara St. Urban Village area.
Design Development
Saw Mill River, Yonkers, NY
•	Creeks closer to being in their natural
states, filter pollutants and produce high
quality water for communities.
•	Daylighting creeks can build community,
neighborhood identity, and a healthy
ecology.
•	Creek Daylight designs provide
communities attractive open space
amenities while achieving sustainability.
Codornices Creek, Albany, CA
•	Multiple restoration projects focused
on diverse aspects of watershed
protection.
•	Restoration of historical creek
meanders through excavation.
•	Use of native plants to cease bank
erosion and provide wildlife habitat.

Remove Trash and Pollutants
to make creeks clean, healthy
and beautiful
Remove Homeless Encampments
to make the creek a safer, cleaner
place the public will want to enjoy.
Plant Native Vegetation
to for flood management, soil erosion
reduction, and attract wildlife.
Remove Non-native Vegetation
to ensure the success of the native
vegetation, and decrease overgrowth.
Improve Stream Flow
by implementing native vegetation
and removing blockages.

•	Divide responsibilities across
multiple entities to establish
clear responsibilities and achieve
common goals.
•	Demolition of bridge and
restoration of stream publicly
funded. Private investment to
surrounding redevelopment
followed.

Coyote Creek Access Improvements
Southeast Greenway, Santa Rosa, CA
•	Purchase of public land may be
necessary to pursue open space projects.
•	Create connections between open
space access, circulation, housing, and
economic development.
•	Identify benefits associated with
connecting to other existing accessible
open spaces.
South Platte River, Denver, CO
•	Access to a city’s natural resources allows
relief from city congestion.
•	Successful open space revitalization
projects include diversity of activities not
typical of the usual city park.
•	Over-engineered channelization of a
creek can limit the park-like waterfront
setting and impact the success of
restoration programs.
