Land use classification doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive and complicated: you can get a good high level representation of current and potential land-use for a land block using freely available data and software. The results of a simple analysis can be used to create profit forecasts for your land that can be used in your land management plan.
In this short demo, we will use QGIS plugins and free data to create a land cover classification from satellite images, a slope analysis from the terrain model, and a land capability classification using the LandCare LUC database. We will then combine the results together to find out what areas of a land block are suitable for horticulture, pasture and forestry.
