Believing that your team will implement change without fully
understanding the objectives or the reasons for the change will
lead to failure.
Here are 10 tips to effectively communicate with your people during
change to give your change programme the best chance of success:
Effective
communication
is key to any
change
management
project.

Step up, in front of your people, to
tell your story. Don’t use impersonal
means of communication in the first
place, like e-mail, to communicate
your project. 2
Communication should be
proactive. If the rumour mill
is already in action, the
company has waited too long
to communicate.

Provide answers to questions only if
you know the answer. It’s much better
to say you don’t know, and that you
will try to find out. But remember to
go back with an answer. 3
Recognise that true
communication is a ‘conversation’.
It is two-way and real discussion
must occur. It cannot be just
a presentation.

Build a story about what you
believe, and what inspired the
change decision. Tell everyone
exactly how you came to the idea
of the change. 6
People’s emotions are where the
momentum for real transformation
ultimately lies. Stories make
people think much more and they
also stick better in memory.

Use strong visual aids to support
your story like pictures and video,
if possible. Words simply make
people read your slides instead
of listening to you. 7
The importance of the
words you use is vital to
ensure buy-in and understanding
of what you are seeking
to achieve.

Communicate the change consistently,
frequently, and through multiple
channels. These include: speaking,
writing, video, training, focus groups,
bulletin boards, social media and more. 10

forums for all levels of the
company to explore changes
together in same sessions. Provide
