  3. 3. DEFINITION • It is a facility within the hospital where surgical operations are carried out in a sterile environment

  5. 5. SURGEON & ASSISTANT EQUIPMENT • Apron-protects from blood stains • Caps-protective cap covering hair
  6. 6. • Shoes, shoe covers • Surgical gloves-prevents contamination between doctor & patients
  7. 7. • Masks-Present over their lower face covering mouth &noses • Glasses-over their eyes

  10. 10. SURGICAL LIGHTS • Operating lights are kept over the table to provide bright light without shadow during surgery
  11. 11. MONITORS • Continuously measures certain parameters • Example-glucose monitoring with glucometre

  13. 13. PULSE OXIMETRY • Involves measurement of the saturated percentage of oxygen in blood
  14. 14. ANAESTHESIA MACHINE • Assists patients breathing during surgery

  16. 16. STERILIZATION & DECONTAMINATION OF SURGICAL THEATRES • BASIC PRINCIPLES 1) Cleaning removes contaminants, dust, organic matter 2) Disinfection reduces number of microbes
  17. 17. What is wrong with our practices • Disinfectants used indiscriminately, • Used unnecessarily • Concentration not adequate • Economic consideration
  18. 18. STERILIZATION • Sterilization is absolute, removes microbes and spores too. • To achieve sterilization is expensive, not sustainable, many times not needed. • An effective sterilization reduces the infections drastically.
  19. 19. BASIC CARE OF OT • Keep the floor clean and dry-bacteria are reduced • Keep the mops dry when not in use • Don’t use chemicals, use only when contaminated with blood &body fluids
  20. 20. HANDLING OF AIR IN OT • Negative air pressure is vented to the operation theatre • Environmental cleaning should be twice daily

  22. 22. PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT OF HOSPITAL LAUNDRY • Clean and adequate quantity of washed linen • Supply to be made on regular basis • Steps to be taken to prevent cross infection • Mechanized laundry is the best service method of linen supply
