Student personal response to Bechtle's "'63 Bel Air"

  1. 1. PERSONAL RESPONSE #2 BY TERRIE BURRIS ART APPRECIATION CLASS SUMMER 2013
  2. 2. 63’ Bel Air, 1973 by Robert Bechtle, American born 1932 Oil on canvas, 48x69 inches.
  3. 3. 63’ BEL AIR…. A SIMPLE TIME, SIMPLE CAR, SIMPLE LIFE.. THE STAPLE OF AMERICA, CARS MEANT FREEDOM, THEY PROVIDED US THE WITH THE ABILITY TO TRAVEL AS WE NEEDED, ALLOWED US TO SEE OUR FAMILIES, A TRUE DESIRED STAPLE OF THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. A TIME OF ONE CAR PER FAMILY, SMALLER COMMUNITIES….. NEIGHBORHOODS, MOM AND POP STORES, AND MY LIFE WAS GOOD. MANY OF MY BEST EARLY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES, ARE FROM THE EARLY 1960’S, WITH TRIPS IN THE CAR WITH MY FATHER AND MOTHER, MOSTLY FOR FISHING TOURNAMENTS, WHERE MY FATHER WON MOST HE ENTERED. ALSO TRIPS TO MY GRANDFATHERS FARM IN WEST TEXAS. WE HAD JUST ONE CAR, SO ALL OF OUR TRIPS REQUIRED MY DAD TO DRIVE, AS MY MOTHER DID KNOW HOW TO DRIVE AT THAT TIME, SO HER AND I WALKED TO THE STORE, BEAUTY SHOP, TO SCHOOL.. WHILE MY DAD WORKED.
  4. 4. NEIGHBORHOODS, SIMPLER TIMES….. COOKIE CUTTER HOUSES, LINE THE STREETS, ALL SIMILAR, IN DESIGN, COLORING, A SIMPLER TIME… EVEN THE YARDS ARE SIMILAR, BUSHES NEATLY CUT, ALL AGAIN SIMILAR IN NATURE, ALL ADDING TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD… MY CHILDHOOD STREET, ALL THE HOUSES WERE THE SAME WITH SIMPLE CHANGES INSIDE, BUT NICE FOR THE TIMES. DOORS REMAINED UNLOCKED, SLEPT WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN, FOR THE COOL BREEZES, A SIMPLER TIME. SLEEP OVERS, WITH FRIENDS, ALL SUMMER LONG.
  5. 5. YARDS AND SIDEWALKS FOR PLAYING WITH THE KIDS UP THE STREET, MOTHERS AT HOME WITH THE CHILDREN, WHILE FATHERS GO TO WORK, ALL IN THEIR AMERICAN MADE MASS PRODUCED CARS….. THE CARS TOOK FAMILIES ACROSS AMERICA, TO SPEND THE SUMMERS ON VACATION, TRAVELING, MAKING CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. GAS WAS CHEAP, AND THERE TIME, TO SEE THINGS FIRST HAND, UP CLOSE…
  6. 6. The 63’ Bel Air, a car, vehicle a necessity for the times, that left a generation with childhood memories of a simple time.
