Introduction
RAF Odiham is situated in North Hampshire. It
operates three Support Helicopter (SH) squadrons
and one Army Air Corps (AAC) lynx squadron. The
flying units are supported by an engineering logistics
wing, which provides 2nd line aircraft, equipment
engineering and logistics support.
Challenges
RAF Odiham noted that a considerable amount of
time was wasted cleaning its Optical Defence Aid
Suites by hand. The work was monotonous and as a
result they found it hard to motivate personnel to
clean the suites to the high standard that is
required. ‘The dust that was produced during the
cleaning process created silicon particulates. This
had associated health and safety implications which
required PPE to be worn by all personnel’ says
Simon Cookman, Chief Technician for RAF Odiham,
MOD.
The Solution
The increase in time and effort that was needed
to clean the Optical Defence Aid Suites by hand
had led RAF Odiham to search for a more
efficient solution. Ultrawave was able to supply
a multi-stage ultrasonic cleaning system that
exceeded their requirements from the outset.

third, allowing more time for rectification which
has increased output. The system parts are
easier to inspect for wear and cracks and the

RAF Odiham has been able to
significantly reduce the time spent on
cleaning from 12 hours to 4 hours,
cutting costs by £30,000 and freeing
personnel’s time to complete other tasks.
The reduced turnaround time has
allowed staff to provide a better service
and to diagnose unforeseen faults that
were previously missed. ‘The system has

operational requirements’ says Chf Tech
Cookman.
