Ellie Goulding Deconstruction

  1. 1. Ellie Goulding „The Writer‟ Deconstruction
  2. 2. Genre Characteristics • At 42 seconds we see the singer is wearing casual clothes and one of the locations is in a field. This shows it belongs to the singer/songwriter genre because it is simple and natural. • We can see this video is hybrid between performance and narrative as she is miming to the lyrics but there is also a story.
  3. 3. Relationship Between Lyrics and Visuals • At 1:46 she sings “I tried out a smile” and at the same time she smiles. • From 2:36 to 2:40 the lyrics are “You wait, I wait, shadows interrupting,” as the sun is shining behind her suggesting a shadow being cast .
  4. 4. Artist Motifs • The video is focused on the singer with a lot of close ups throughout.
  5. 5. Notion of Looking • At 1:12 we get a very high angle shot looking down on the singer, then in the next shot at 1:15 we can see a lighthouse which suggest that she was being watched from the top of it. • From 1:56 to 1:57 she is looking at something in the lighthouse.
