-1"Love Story" is the title of a song written and recorded by American country
artist Taylor Swift. It is the first single from her second studio album, 2008's
Fearless. The song was released in September 2008, and by November it
reached the top of the Billboard country chart for two weeks, becoming her
third Billboard Number One. It also became her first top five hit on the
Billboard Hot 100. "Love Story" is Swift's first international single, venturing
into other markets outside North America and Australia. The single is also
Swift's first to receive remixes for the clubs. As of the week ending February 8,
2009, "Love Story" had been downloaded more than 4 million times, making it
the most downloaded country song in history and is the best-selling country
song in the United States surpassing LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live" by 1
The video starts with Taylor Swift walking out of school; she is dressed in a
normal top and cardigan and is holding her books. She then spots a boy
sitting under a tree reading, they hold eye contact. Their surroundings are
very green and real looking, it looks real and believable. The story then cuts to
a kind of fantasy world where Taylor Swift is in an elaborate princess styled
dress, the boy is dressed up in an old fashioned suit with frilly cuffs and tights
trousers. I think this time period represents every girls dream fantasy. It’s kind
of Disney princess like, with the girl looking beautiful and falls in love with a
handsome man. Taylor then starts singing, standing on a balcony in a castle.
She is telling the ‘fantasy’ story of how they met; this is helped by shots of the
fantasy action. It is almost like there are three time periods within the one
video. The first being her at school and this all happening in her imagination,
her after all the fantasy action waiting for her ‘prince’ in the castle, and shots
of the fantasy action that she’s singing about.
In the fantasy world there is a colour scheme of gold and cream. I think these
are good colours for a fantasy because they represent riches and dreams.
Plus they’re quite warm colours, which gives a happy and comfortable
atmosphere. Light and candles seem to be in every shot of the fantasy world,
I think this is for romantic purposes.
The lyrics suggest that the story is Taylor Swifts own take on Romeo and
Juliet. The fact they’re not allowed to be together but they can’t help it
because they’re so in love.
The video is very innocent and shows a traditional love story where they
dance and talk instead of more modern videos where they portray more
mature sexual scenes.
I think this adds to the Disney fantasy style of the video.
The video then moves on to the couple meeting up in secret in the garden.
Here Taylor Swift is holding a lantern with a candle in it. I think this again
shows the romantic fantasy.
Next they are still in the garden at night and there is a horse in the scene. This
is very fantasy like as well and also is very cliché. They then have to leave
each other, and there are more shots of where they met like they are
remembering what happened. So we now have another time zone within the
Taylor Swift is then waiting for her Romeo on the balcony again so it now goes
back to the present day in the fantasy, then she sees him running towards her
and she runs down to meet him. The sun is shining and they’re in their castle
and he asks her to marry him. It then cuts back to the reality with the guy
walking up to her.
I think this video is aimed at young teenagers. The idea of a fantasy world
where you’re in love and you have a white horse and a castle would appeal
most to them. However I think that maybe it would also appeal to an older
generation that secretly dream of this idea too. I think as well as Romeo and
Juliet the story shows elements of Pride and Prejudice I think the things that
made this video so successful are the costumes, the location and the actual
The costumes fitted the characters really well and although it was set in the
past Taylor Swift still looks pretty, I think young teenagers would aspire to look
like her for perhaps their prom. Also the man that Taylor Swift falls in love with
is very handsome.
There are definately aspects here which I will consider when creating my
music video. For example, my audience has to relate to the charcaters
involved in the video. There has to be a sense of love and mystery which
appeals to the teenage audience and I believe the story itself has to be a
very strong component.
