Who We Help: <ul><li>United Way helps over 290,000 youth participants </li></ul><ul><li>United Way specifically helps with: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>educational and recreational after-school programs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>leadership development & counselling </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>employment training and job placements </li></ul></ul><ul><li>United Way helps them to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Learn life skills from positive role models </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Become productive members of society </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Participate in productive pastimes </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Stay off the street </li></ul></ul>$300 transports 6 seniors home from the hospital and provides a Personal Support worker for three hours to make sure they’re settled after their hospital stay United Way is now the #1 funder of community services & programs in Toronto, other than the government.

Did you know? <ul><li>The rate of family poverty in Toronto is 24.7% with one in 4 children living below the poverty line </li></ul><ul><li>35% of recent newcomers are low income </li></ul><ul><li>In 2007 8% of people were unemployed in Toronto </li></ul><ul><li>50% of all female murder victims are killed by individuals who they knew intimately at some time </li></ul><ul><li>51% of food bank users report having a disability or limitation </li></ul><ul><li>One third of adults and just under half of children with disabilities have unmet needs </li></ul><ul><li>Although United Way Toronto raised over $108 million in 2007, we received over $600 million in funding requests </li></ul>$250 gives 5 women with history of abuse 2 hours of Counseling, helping them rebuild their lives

Other typical year results <ul><li>Helps 339,000 children under 15 years of age </li></ul><ul><li>Helps 218,000 newcomers get established </li></ul><ul><li>Provides 294,000 nights of shelter & 948,000 meals for the hungry and homeless </li></ul><ul><li>Provides 68,000 nights of safe haven shelter to abused women & children </li></ul><ul><li>Supports 159,000 seniors with different programs like meals on wheels, exercise programs, homemaking services, etc </li></ul><ul><li>Supports 52,000 disabled people with rehabilitation, independent living skills, social and recreational day programs, home help and transportation </li></ul>$80 provides a 3 hour conversation circle for 15 newcomers to help them learn English and integrate into Canada

    11. 11. Where the Money Goes: An Imagine Canada survey reports that the average fundraising cost ratio of charities in Canada is 21.8% United Way’s expenses are only 12.6% This includes administration costs.

How do you make a difference? <ul><li>By becoming a donor </li></ul><ul><li>Donate using the on-line tool </li></ul><ul><li>E.g. $10 a pay cheque is one lunch a week </li></ul><ul><li>Company matches your donation for double the benefit </li></ul><ul><li>Designate to the United Way in your area </li></ul><ul><li>Designate which agencies you want to support </li></ul>$45 allows one senior to participate in an 8 week “Access to the Internet” computer course
