  3. 3. Care for God's Earth! Introduction Who really owns the earth, the air, the oceans, the streams? Who owns the soil as it moves from the Kentucky hills down the Ohio River and into the Mississippi Delta? God does! This concept is key to God's covenant relationship with the people of Israel and to our identity as a people of God. We are called through our covenant relationship to participate as stewards in God's creative work … to care for the earth for our own and future generations… so that all may live in peace and abundance (KCC Policy Statement, “Caring for God’s Earth”).
  4. 4. Care for God's Earth! Guiding Question Guiding Question: How can we care for God’s Earth?
  5. 5. Care for God's Earth! Bible Passages Psalm 24: 1-2; Psalm 136:1-9; Genesis 9:8-16; Genesis 2:15;. Isaiah 24: 1-5; Romans 1:20; Romans 8:19-23; Leviticus 25:23-24.
  6. 6. Care for God's Earth! Guiding Bible Passage Psalm 24: 1-2 1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; 2 for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
  7. 7. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Supplies You will need: Bibles, a candle, bits of trash, a plastic bag. A fishbowl (glass) filled with cloudy water. A fishbowl (glass) filled with clear water. One piece of cardboard for every participant, glue and staples, string, wire, adhesive tape, sticky tack, white paper, colored markers, crayons, pencils, and/or pens.
  8. 8. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/ Introduction The Bible Study will highlight 5 different Bible Passages: Psalm 24; Psalm 136; Genesis 9; Genesis 2 and Isaiah 24:. The Bible Passages can be reflected consecutively in one group or the group could be divided up into smaller groups. The small group could discuss one of the Bible Passages and report their discussion to the larger group when the group reconvenes.
  9. 9. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Worship Center Arrange the plastic bag on the table as if it were a tablecloth. Put a candle in a candleholder (not directly on top of the plastic as it might melt) and place it on the table. Arrange bits of trash on top of the plastic bag. Arrange the fishbowls (glasses) on the table. You could put the Bible at the head of the table, the candle at the foot of the table and the fishbowls or glasses at either edge of the table. The trash could be placed to form a cross horizontally between the Bible and the candle and vertically between the two fish bowls.
  10. 10. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Psalm 24:1-2/Opening Prayer Psalm 24: 1-2: The Earth Belongs to God. Gather around the Worship Center. Read Psalm 24:1-2 out loud. Pray the Lord’s Prayer.
  11. 11. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Psalm 24:1-2 1.Psalm 24: 1-2 Read: Psalm 24: 1-2. The earth belongs to God. In Psalm 24 we read that the earth belongs not to us, but to God. Ask: What implication does this have for the way we treat the earth?
  12. 12. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Psalm 24:1-2 1.Psalm 24: 1-2 Reflect: How have I worked together with God to take care of creation? How have I worked to destroy creation? What concrete steps can I take to work to care for creation? Activity: Have the participants draw up a covenant with each other detailing specific steps they will take to care for creation in the next week/month.
  13. 13. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Psalm 24:1-2/Resources Read: The Kentucky Council of Churches Policy Statement on Caring for God’s Earth. http://www.kycouncilofchurches.org/council-statements/ Click on “Caring for God’s Earth” Ask: How does this statement deepen your understanding of the Biblical Passages?
  14. 14. Care for God's Earth! Bible Study/Psalm 24: 1-2/Creation Art Give every participant a piece of cardboard. Ask them to go outside and collect leaves, twigs, grasses, dirt, pebbles, etc. When they return ask them to glue the items they have collected onto the cardboard to reflect their understanding of the state of creation now, and their hope for creation in the future. Ask the participants to explain their Artwork to the group. If the Bible Study will continue for more than one week, ask the participants to carry a trash bag with them for one week and to collect the trash they find lying around on the street and on campus. When they return ask them to get into groups to create a “trash” sculpture. Perhaps these sculptures can be displayed on campus.
