  1. 1. OPENING PRAYER 1 SPONTANEOUS PRAYER
  2. 2. MORAL DEVIATIONS AGAINST THE SECOND COMMANDMENT (JAMES 3:1-11)
  3. 3. Lesson Objectives: At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:  discuss orally the moral deviations against the Second Commandment;  assume responsibility to protect God’s and Others’ name at all times;  acclaim God’s name through the song, Holy, Holy, Holy… and  determine whether the concepts about the lesson discussed are true or false. 3
  4. 4. Guide Questions: 1. Share your answers with the class. 2. What do you feel about your name? Why? 3. If you were given the chance to decide/change/choose your own name, what would it be? Why? 4. How important is your name? 4
  5. 5. Since the name stands for the person, any misuse of it is misgiving and disrespecting the person. In the same way, if we misuse words with the intention of doing harm, we misuse a very important tool of communication God has given us. 5
  6. 6. To abuse words in lying, cursing, slander, etc. is not only to disrespect the person, it is dishonoring God, too! Persons are sacred beings. They must be given due respect. 6
  7. 7. INPUT › SINS OF THE TONGUE (JAMES 3:1-11) 7
  8. 8. We must be aware always and everywhere of misuse of God’s name and even the names of the Saints. 8
  9. 9. › The Second Commandment forbids the following; 1. LYING – concealment and corruption of truth to save one’s face 9
  10. 10. 2. CURSING – includes slander, telling of bad words, calling down punishment on others, silly or obscene talks 10
  11. 11. 3. BLASPHEMY – consist of uttering words against God, words of hatred, reproach or defiance, speaking ill of God, failing in respect towards Him, language against Christ’s Church, the Saints, and Sacred things, use God’s name to cover up criminal practices. (CCC 2148) 11
  12. 12. 4. PERJURY – making a promise under oath with no intention of keeping it, after promising an oath s/he does not keep it, lack of respect for the Lord of all speech, pledging oneself by oath to commit an evil deed is contrary to the holiness of the Divine Name. (CCC 2152) 12
  13. 13. 5. FALSE OATH – taking an oath or swearing is to take God as a witness to what one affirms, to invoke the Divine truthfulness as a pledge of one’s own truthfulness, invocation of the Divine Name as a witness to truth. (CCC 2150, 2154) 13
  14. 14. 6. BREAKING OF PROMISES – promises made to others in God’s name engage the divine honor, fidelity, truthfulness and authority, to be unfaithful to them is to misuse God’s name and in the same way to make God out to be a liar. (CCC 2147) 14
  15. 15. SYNTHESIS When God said not to use His name in vain, He wants us to use it for the greater glory of His name. The phrase, “Name in vain”, means more than rough language/for no reason. Originally, it referred to using God’s name in sorcery, invoking curses on others and conjuring up evil spirits or claiming the power inherent in God’s personal name to do harm to others. 15
  16. 16. In view of the biblical understanding of name, then, using the name of God in vain was equivalent to refusing to follow and obey God, even trying to manipulate the power of His name for one’s benefit and to do evil to others. (CFC #897) 16
  17. 17. “The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place, but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the most tempting moment. 17
  18. 18. Guide Questions: › How do you respect God’s name? › How about yours? How about others? › How do you defend God’s name to the non-believers? (if any) 18
