About the Presenter:

Nick Shonsky is the Director of Continuous Improvement at The Standard Group.

Nick started his journey in the printing industry a week before he graduated from high school in 1991 when he was hired at Acorn Press, Inc. He started out making plates - back when plate making was a skill. He learned as much as he could in pre-press while making plates.

When digital printing came around he began as a backup operator and eventually the lead operator. In 2001 he was asked to move into customer service / project management. Acorn Press was eventually sold to Standard Offset and they became the Standard Group.

Nick continued his role as project manager with a pharmaceutical specialty. He also helped with building the storefront support on the customer service side. In 2015 the company made a decision to adopt a Lean culture and he was asked to become the lead in that endeavor. In 2016 he took on the role of Continuous Improvement Specialist full time.

  5. 5. About The Standard Group The Standard Group took shape in 1895 under the name of Standard Paper Box Manufacturing Co. Back then, our primary business involved the manufacturing of boxes. By the mid- 1920s, we migrated into the addition of letterpress work to print the wraps for the boxes we assembled and sold. Our modern history started in 1983 when Charlotte Cooper purchased the company from Robert Peters and Judge Daniel Huyett, whose father and uncle founded the company. To evolve our ideas, skills, processes and the nature of our driven value in a fast-paced world, we have continually expanded decade after decade. In 1996, we added mailing and fulfillment capabilities with our purchase of Calloway Network in Lancaster, PA. We acquired a company staffed by experts in the intricacies of mailing—who had been doing this work on a daily basis for many years. Further strategic acquisitions continued to add to the company’s product offerings with Acorn Press in 2008 and its commercial printing innovation such as G7 color management, stochastic printing and custom packaging. The addition of Veitch Printing in the same year brought expertise in web-to-print, print-on-demand, marketing resource management and database capabilities. With Whitmore Printing came small orders and a focus on efficiency and automation. The purchase of Donald Blyler Offset enabled us to achieve a new level of print craftsmanship and print effects. The deal with TSI Associates brought sourcing and procurement expertise as well as key vendor relationships for apparel, events, trade shows and promotional products. And with the most recent acquisition of print innovator Epic Litho, we began our shift to UV printing technology, increasing our ability to print with greater color intensity, better efficiency due to no drying time needed and greater versatility since no coating is required. The transition to high definition UV printing technology allowed us to better support luxury brands, commercial real estate, higher education, auction houses and art galleries, further opening markets in Philadelphia and New York City.
