  25. Working on EU proposals and projects Date: 25th March 2021 Author: Paul Mulholland
  26. Background • I’ve been working on EU projects and proposals since 2000 • Mainly in the areas of technology for cultural heritage, education and humanities research • Currently working on the following H2020 projects: – SPICE [1]: • Developing tools and methods for Citizen Curation • Working with excluded groups in five museums in different countries – Polifonia [2]: • Developing a digital archive for European music • 10 pilot applications supporting musicians, scholars, interest groups and people with disabilities [1] https://spice-h2020.eu [2] https://polifonia-project.eu
  27. Benefits of EU projects • Collaboration – Others have salary and travel budget to work with you (and you with them) – Interdisciplinary work opens new perspectives on your own research • Ambition – Can address larger problems, beyond any institution or country • Impact – Have the resources and partnership needed to get working solutions to end users • Communication and dissemination – Opportunities for your collective work to get known and picked up across communities inside and outside academia
  28. Tips on applying for European funding • Allow plenty of time for proposal writing – I aim to have a short bid outline and key partners in place 6 months before the deadline. Not always possible, but don’t leave it too late. • Have a “Plan B” for rejected proposals – You might not be successful first time. SPICE and Polifonia both built on rejected proposals • Plan for true collaboration – Funding is not for working in silos – Complementary expertise brought together to solve a problem • A good impact story is vital – How does the research get out and how does it make a difference? – In H2020, impact carried as many points as research excellence

  47. TRI’s participation in the EU security work programmes David Wright Director www.trilateralresearch.com
  48. Trilateral likes the EC’s security work programme • Trilateral has partnered or co-ordinated in more than 60 EU-funded projects since we founded the company in 2004. • For many years, EU-funded projects were our principal source of revenues and allowed us to grow. • But we recognised the risk of dependency on one client and have been diversifying our client base substantially over the last several years. • We have built a new client base on the back of the research and services we provided in EU projects. • Now we provide data protection services to UK universities, hospitals, museums, publishers, law enforcement agencies, etc. We develop algorithms and have created a human security platform for defence & humanitarian clients.
  49. Why UK entities should participate • EU projects provide a source of revenues. • You get to participate in state-of-the-art research and innovation. • You get to network with some of the best people across Europe. • You can develop new services based on what you do in the projects. • Participating in EU projects gives you some credibility, helps with your dissemination activities, e.g., you can recycle deliverables into articles or blogposts.
  50. Advice for SMEs • Keep to the scope of the call. • Give yourself plenty of time to prepare your proposal. • Make sure the participation criteria is met. • If you need advice assistance and/or support get in touch with the NCP. • Be aware of the differences between H2020 and Horizon Europe.
