Social Science Research • Ensure the Future Flight Challenge is leading socially informed innovation. • Understand how society can be influenced, positively and negatively when being introduced to transformative innovations. • Highlight key social science considerations for building public trust in Future Flight • Identify priority social sciences issues that Future Flight needs to address (safety, risk, noise etc). • Identify levers to address challenges in building trustworthiness in Future Flight. • Provide recommendations to inform the direction of research and study. • Bring guidance to the Challenge to ensure societal elements are embedded into developments rather than sitting in parallel to the programme.

Impacts on Rural and Urban Environments: urban/rural planning, infrastructure development, and broader environmental issues (inc. privacy, noise and visual pollution). 4. Communities and Social Impacts: accessibility, socio-economic factors, equality and social inclusion 5. Trustworthiness, regulatory frameworks and implications: safety, risk, insurance and legal issues. Core social and economic research themes:

Key issues to address in developing research themes… Future Flight Challenge has the potential to be socially, economically and environmentally transformative in ways that transcend traditional aviation studies…. Emerging field of study – need to grow social science research capacity Areas covered by the Future Flight Challenge are segmented on the technological side….as well as on the social sciences side Need to engage across industry, policy, regulatory, public sector and academic communities

Baseline nationally representative survey • Public awareness/perceived relevance • Media messaging/narratives- where, what, how. • Perceived Impacts – personal, social, economic, environmental... • Social desirability, public trust, enthusiasm or scepticism • Demographics – contextualize findings.
  8. 8. Innovation Eco- system mapping • Identifying stakeholders including those working across public sector, industry, academia • Understanding different stakeholders' priorities and needs • Identifying existing and potential exchange relationships
  9. 9. Public Dialogue and Consultation • Public dialogue events with key publics (e.g., urban and rural communities). • Potential for targeted consultation with communities of interest (e.g., current recreational airspace users, environmental groups or specific demographics or communities)
