  1. 1. Do not question how to feed the world? but how to feed the metropoles?More than half of the world population and almost half of the population of Africa lives inmetropoles. This population is growing fast and generates a huge demand in food.As an important part of the answer, eco-agrohubs have to be developed.Eco-agrohubs are multi-functional centers, under multi-stakeholder leadership includingthe national Ministry of Agriculture, that link consumer demand to agricultural productionand link foreign aid to local potential. These hubs are based on ecological principles and create networks of the diversestakeholders that are active in the rural-urban food interaction. Their goal is to boost ruraleconomy by feeding the metropolitan population. The functions of the eco-agrohubs are: Action points for the Dutch government: - Logistics and storage (will also lead - Initiate and execute the to reduction of food waste) development of such eco-agrohubs - Trade and (micro)finance, to reduce in cooperation with local speculation and ‘killing’ loans, giving government. an entry point to agribusiness and - Mobilizing / channelling support financial institutions from development actors - Education, advice and experiments, (multilaterals, business, NGO’s, giving an entry point to knowledge science, investors) institutions like FAO, CGIAR, - Develop within 5 years eco- universities, NGO’s agrohubs in 15 metropoles in the - Organizing farmers, home for farmer African focal countries of the Dutch based organizations, giving an entry development cooperation.
