Torrents and Magnets
Charles Justin Tula
Torrents
 .torrent files store information on the files shared
with bittorrent protocol
 Files stored on sites and are connected to tracker
sites.
 Files store various types of info including the URL of
the tracker site, the hash codes of the files it has
and names of the files.
 .torrent files are stored on a central server which
leaves the hosting site open to legal issues if the
content is copyrighted.
 No longer used
Magnets
 HOW DO THEY WORK?
 Started in 2002.
 Has just hash code for the torrent
 Uses DHT instead of trackers.
 No central server hosting the file. No
legal trouble.
 Chrome doesn’t recognize magnets
yet, while Firefox does.
What does this mean to you?
 NOTHING!
 Torrent sites should be around for longer with it being harder to link legal
issues to them.
