THE ORIGINS
The Piaggio company was founded in Genoa in 1884, by twenty-year old Rinaldo Piaggio. It moved from timber machining to the production of ship fittings and, later, aeroplanes and seaplanes. Piaggio became one of the country’s largest aircraft manufacturers.

THE INVENTION
Vespa was first produced in Pontedera in April 1946.
The first prototype for Vespa was called MP6.
Designed by Corradino D’Ascanio, an aeronautical engineer.

Vespa scooters skyrocketed in popularity through the 1950s,
particularly because of their success in Hollywood movies.
Audrey Hepburn who rode a Vespa in 1952 film ‘Roman Holiday’
helped the company to sell over 100,000 scooters.
Other movie celebrities soon followed the suit:
John Wayne, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin and Abbe Lane.
