We need to stop dividing ourselves over topics that turn into petty hate, instead we need turn to lively intellectual debate.
A new way forward in civil discourse.
Piers Morgan left
Good Morning
Britain last week
and it set Twitter a
flutter over if he
was wronged or
was out of line.
The subject was The Royals but
the fight has been the same for years now…
What is “cancel culture” and what is
being held accountable?
Shortly after his departure
Alex (GMB’s weatherman)
voiced that he didn’t want
Piers gone, just to listen.
After Maria Shriver tweeted
about Alex’s response
and the need for listening
and understanding
I responded…
Maria liked my tweet and
even though I was kinda
kidding when I wrote it,
I really do believe
we need a new way to
debate ideas.
And not to score points
but to challenge ourselves
and each other to evolve.
No one knows it all…
yet we’re all so sure
we’re right.
We need to normalize folks taking in fresh
perspectives, listening to experts and others’
opinions and expanding our own understanding.
Our world is facing real challenges beyond royal
rumblings… if we keep dividing ourselves into
tribal sides we won’t ever solve deep problems.
Racism, gun safety, income inequality, human rights,
the climate crisis. Squabbling is one way to air our
viewpoint, intellectual debate and problem solving
is by far better.
So Piers, I’m sure you will receive offers
coming in to do tabloid trash TV or
faux-outrage Fox-like programming
but instead you could use your gifts to
make debate a new format for good…
because there’s so many
to be proven wrong
and so much to be
made right in our world!
Find me @JoyMeredith to discuss further.
And Maria, if he’s a pass we
can call it Prove Us Wrong
and with a few tweaks make
it our own 😜
