SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Todd Sedano; Engineering Manager, Pivotal. Is your team disruption proof? What would happen if your key developer went on medical leave or left the company? I’ll explain one way to enable your team to not only survive, but thrive through abrupt changes in team composition. By following the practices of sustainable software development your team can dramatically improve its bus count. I’ll recount a story about how my team continued to deliver through chaotic times. This ten person team slowly lost most of its developers yet still delivered the product successfully. In the end, 22 developers worked on the 43 week project. I’ll dig into the reasons that enabled this team to continue to turn the development crank, week after week, and month after month. By implementing practices that removed knowledge silos and technical debt, your team can succeeded in the face of disruption.

SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Dave Ehringer; Technical Director, Platforms, Liberty Mutual With Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Spring, application groups within Liberty Mutual have experienced a dramatic reduction in time required to bring ideas to the market and developed the flexibility to move applications between clouds based on business need. In this session, Liberty Mutual will share their experiences instating CI/CD and share best practices they picked up along the way.

Puppet is an awesome tool to automate the configuration of your infrastructure, but it's also a potential attack vector. In this talk, we'll discuss some common patterns and changes you can make to harden your Puppet infrastructure, from the basic good practises such as data abstraction in modules, to some advanced customisation you might need in a high-security setup.

SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Casey West; Principal Technologist, Pivotal This talk will use the seminal twelve-factor app essay as a guide to discuss the do’s and dont’s of building and running containers. Each factor gives us an opportunity to consider avoidable anti-patterns if you’re using containers to deploy and manage repeatable, reliable, and portable services. Containers rose in popularity on an oft used metaphor: lightweight virtual machines. We have a robust understanding of the benefits of virtualized hardware as a method of efficient resource utilization. The idea of even more efficient resource utilization makes sense. Unfortunately it’s a problematic metaphor. Containers represent a constrained set of capabilities compared to virtual machines in order to make fine-grained guarantees about resource constraints and process isolation. This is a good thing. There is overlap in ideal capabilities between VMs and containers but it isn’t complete. Newcomers to the container ecosystem begin with a “lightweight VM” understanding and fall victim to specific anti-patterns. After this talk you’ll understand common pitfalls in containerization and how you can avoid them. This discussion is useful for developers who wish to gain greater understanding of the environment their applications are deployed to, as well as operators interested in the benefits of containers for their architecture.

SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Chris Bartlow; Senior Director, Liberty Mutual. Technology can be viewed as a disruptive force, but for Liberty Mutual it has been an enabler; an enabler of the collaborative nature and the customer centricity which has always been a part of the company. Learn more about how technology was used in the transformation of a storied organization with more than one hundred years of success. Understand why Liberty Mutual chose to partner with Pivotal, ultimately architecting and implementing a solution without 3rd party help. Find out about how developers are freed from the operational aspects of code creation to be more creative, productive, and do more fulfilling work.

It was first adopted by large internet companies like Netflix and now is popular with enterprise architects everywhere. You may find yourself asking what the main premises of MSA are and whether it replaces SOA. In this webinar Frank and Srinath will Compare and contrast MSA with SOA and discuss both their pros and cons Examine what MSA looks like in practice Answer questions such as where to use databases, how to use security and how to perform service orchestration and integration Discuss practical challenges

SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Matt Parker; Engineering Director, Pivotal. TDD, the savior of bad code, the promise of a better world. And yet… so many teams have tried TDD and failed. It’s a deceptively simple practice that actually requires a good deal of craftsmanship and skill to wield effectively. Through explanations and examples, we’ll examine a number of common problems teams face, including: Test Coupling Many folks our community promote the idea that unit testing means having a test file for every production class, and a test for every public method. And yet this tightly couples tests to the underlying design patterns of the codebase, and makes it hard to refactor. We’ll look at a way to minimize the surface area of your testing and intentionally define an interface between your tests and production code. Mocking (Hammer of the Gods) Mockito (and libraries like it) have created very simple and powerful ways for Java developers to create and use test doubles in their tests. And yet those libraries have also led to a good deal of misunderstanding and misuse of test doubles. We’ll examine the five types of test doubles, their roles, and when they’re applicable – and we’ll also look at the common problems developers run into misusing these tools and concepts. Death by a Thousand Flakes Outside-in behavior driven development is a commonly used practice. And yet we have too often conflated “outside” with ”GUI” – with disastrous results. We’ll look at the problems this has caused, including slow test suites, flaky test suites, upside down testing pyramids, and more. Test Suite Bankruptcy When all of these bad practices combine, they lead to one place: test suite bankruptcy. We’ll examine a case study of a team that, with the best intentions, applied all of these practices together for the better part of a year, and was forced to declare test suite bankruptcy at the end. We’ll talk about the tell-tale signs that you are approaching bankruptcy, and what you should do if you ever find yourself in that situation (or inheriting that situation from others).
