  1. 1. PROJECT QUALITY MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE AREA
  2. 2. OVERVIEW OF THE QUALITY MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE AREA • The activities and processes that define the quality responsibilities of the project • Defines what quality level is acceptable and how acceptable quality is determined This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY
  3. 3. PROCESSES OF THE PROJECT QUALITY MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE AREA 8.1 PLAN QUALITY MANAGEMENT 8.2 MANAGE QUALITY 8.3 CONTROL QUALITY
  4. 4. IMPORTANT TERMS
  5. 5. QUALITY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A PRODUCT THAT MEET OR FULFILL THE STATED AND DEFINED REQUIREMENTS
  6. 6. DELIVERABLES THAT HAVE THE SAME FUNCTIONAL USE BUT DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS GRADE This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
  7. 7. THE MEASUREMENT OF HOW EXACT OR PRECISE THE PRODUCT MEETS REQUIREMENTS PRECISION This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY
  8. 8. THE MEASUREMENT OF HOW CORRECT SOMETHING IS WHEN COMPARED TO THE REQUIREMENTS ACCURACY This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY
  9. 9. IMPORTANT TERMS • Gold Plating • Giving more to customers than the agreed upon requirements • Marginal Analysis • Investigating the point where expected benefits equals the incremental costs to achieve quality • At some point, more quality does not equal more value • Continuous Improvement • The act of continuously looking for small improvements to quality • Just in Time (JIT) • The rate of demand controls the rate of production • May be called Kanban within Agile JIT Delivery systems
  10. 10. IMPORTANT TERMS • Total Quality Management (TQM) • A philosophy that encourages a total organizational approach to quality involving all of the employees working to continuously improve • Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) • Increased costs with rework • Causes increased delays with lower customer satisfaction
  11. 11. QUALITY PIONEERS • W. Edwards Deming • Joseph Juran
  12. 12. W. EDWARDS DEMING Developed the Plan- Do-Check-Act or the Deming Cycle The 14 points to quality management
  13. 13. JOSEPH JURAN Created the 80/20 Rule – or the Pareto Principle • 80% of outputs are defined by 20% of the inputs • Also called the law of the vital few Defined quality as a “fitness for use”
  14. 14. PHILIP CROSBY Conceptualized the Cost of Poor Quality Believed that quality was how well something conformed to the requirements
  15. 15. 8.1 PLAN QUALITY MANAGEMENT OCCURS DURING THE PLANNING PROCESS GROUP
  16. 16. PLAN QUALITY MANAGEMENT PROCESS Work concerned with identifying those requirements related to quality or the necessary standards for the project to demonstrate compliance with quality requirements
  17. 17. 8.1 PLAN QUALITY MANAGEMENT • OCCURS DURING THE PLANNING PROCESS GROUP • PROVIDES THE GUIDANCE TO MANAGE THE QUALITY IN THE PROJECT • THE QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLAN IS AN OUTPUT • SHOULD INCLUDE OR DEFINE ANY QUALITY STANDARD NEEDED TO BE MET • MEASURING AND VALIDATING PRODUCT DELIVERABLES
  18. 18. QUALITY MANAGEMENT Cost Benefit Analysis Compares the benefits of meeting quality requirements compared to the costs Cost of Quality (COQ) The cost of meeting the quality requirements Cost of Conformance Cost spent avoiding quality failures Cost of Nonconformance Costs associated with correcting quality failures
  19. 19. QUALITY MANAGEMENT Benchmarking Examine past projects to find improved practices on current projects Design of Experiments (DOE) Define or determine variances to improve quality Statistical Sampling Examine part of the product population for quality assessment
  20. 20. OUTPUTS OF PLAN QUALITY MANAGEMENT • Quality Management Plan • Required Quality Activities / Quality Checklists • Quality Metrics • Reliability • Frequency of Defects • Failure rate • Process Improvement Plan • Project Document and Project Plan Updates
  21. 21. 8.2 MANAGE QUALITY OCCURS DURING THE EXECUTING PROCESS GROUP
  22. 22. MANAGE QUALITY PROCESS The process of verifying that the proper quality processes are being followed during project execution
  23. 23. 8.2 MANAGE QUALITY • OCCURS DURING THE EXECUTING PROCESS GROUP • ENSURE QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES IDENTIFY IN THE QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLAN ARE IMPLEMENTED • WORK TO IMPROVE QUALITY PROCESSES • OUTPUTS • PROJECT DOCUMENT UPDATES • PROJECT PLAN UPDATES • CHANGE REQUESTS
  24. 24. MANAGING QUALITY • Verification that quality control measures are being followed Quality Audits • The act of working to understanding a process and looking for weak areas that can be improved Process Analysis
  25. 25. 8.3 CONTROL QUALITY OCCURS DURING THE MONITORING & CONTROLLING PROCESS GROUP This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
  26. 26. CONTROLLING QUALITY PROCESS Process concerned with monitoring the results of quality activities and determine if changes needed to be made to those quality activities to better meet the requirements
  27. 27. 8.3 CONTROL QUALITY • OCCURS DURING THE MONITORING & CONTROLLING PROCESS GROUP • RECORDS THE RESULTS OF QUALITY ACTIVITY • IDENTIFYING CAUSES IMPACTING QUALITY • WORKING TO TAKE ACTION TO ELIMINATE QUALITY ISSUES • VERIFY THAT DELIVERABLES MEET THE QUALITY REQUIREMENTS • GOLD PLATING, OR TOO HIGH OF QUALITY MAY ALSO BE AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED
