  1. 1. MP03: Heat engine and auxiliary systems (GS Automoció) UF1: Car’s engine: operation, components and checks NA1: Car’s engine: components The most important system in a car is the engine. It allows the vehicle to move. Nowadays, We have different engines, depending on the energy source that can move, eg. Fuel engine, diesel engine, electrical engine, hydrogen engine,… Now, we will learn different parts and pieces of the most common engine, de fuel one. However, other engines are similar, with some modifications Activity 1.- Warming-up (Speaking) Discuss about the following questions: - What pieces or components do you know in a car’s engine? - Do you know some functions that make an engine?
  2. 2. Context: Here you can see different engine's components and their situation on the engine Key words To collect To connect To enable To expel To feed To locate To measure To move To remove To turn Vocabulary and expressions for learning At At the bottom Behind Below Between In In front of Near On On top To the left To the right Under
  3. 3. Activity 2.- In pairs, ask your partner about the place of 10 components in the engine of the picture. Eg: - Where is located the distributor? The distributor is located on the water pump, or, the distributor is located to the right of the alternator Activity 3.- Now, we learn the function of the components. Match the components of the engine with the definition of its function 1.Air filter 2. PVC hose 3. Filter hole 4. Cylinder head cover 5. Spark plug cable 6. Spark plug cover 7. Spark plug 8. Exhaust manifold 9. Dip stick 10. Flywheel 11. Engine block 12. Exhaust pipe 13. Oil filter 14. Gas line 15. Gas pump 16. Oil drain plug 17. Radiator hose 18. Pulley 19. Fan belt 20. Water pump 21. Fan 22. Alternator 23. Distributor 24. Valve spring A. cylindrical part forming the opening of the oil container B. cable connecting the spark plug to the distributor cap C. ignition device of an internal combustion engine D. device that removes impurities from air passing trough it. E.system that collects spent gases F. instrument that measures the level of oil in a motor G. vinyl tube H. set consisting the motor, the clutch and the gearbox I. removable cover on the upper part of the motor J. device that removes impurities from oil passing through it K. device that moves gas from the gas tank to the engine L. cover protecting the spark plug and its cable M. cylindrical part that is removed to drain oil from the engine N. small wheel with a grooved rim, bitted with a belt, that turns the cooling fan O. piece of rubber that wraps around the pulleys and turns the cooling fan P. wheel that, while turning, regulates the speed of the engine Q. device that circulates water through the radiator R. apparatus that feed in oxygen the engine's combustion S. pipe through which spent gas is expelled T. case that enables engine's ignition U. network of hoses that transports the gas V. mechanism that keeps the valve closed W. generator that enables current in both directions X. treated rubber tube that connects the lines of a combustion engine Activity 4.- Take all these cards with the names and the functions of the 24 components and, in groups of 3, go to the garage. Choose one engine and tag their pieces with its name and its function
