San Gabriel de Turrubares.
With a few thousand dollars in donated funds from Universidad National (UNA) and a million
bees, housewives in this rural area of Costa Rica are learning to become successful
businesswomen. Their business is honey and they are using it to supplement their struggling
finances in this agriculture-dependent area. One year after UNA’s Center for Tropical
Beekeeping Research (CINAT) initiated the project. “We have left the laboratories and our
research is being used in communities that really need it” said Luis Sanchez, of the research
center. “These are the seeds of the transfer technology. The project is part of a program in
which 134 people – including 76 women from 11 organizations in Puriscal have been trained

The English language has become very important to the Costa Rica job market. In the national
newspapers you find many pages of jobs needing to be filled. The requirement you find for most
of them is to be bilingual in English and Spanish, sometimes just to apply. One of these ads is the
Bilingual Job Fair that many multinational companies hold together. This year, the fair took place
at Fercori in San Jose and a remarkable 6,000 people attended looking for a job. Once inside
these fairs, the applicants go from table to table leaving with the prospective employers their
resume. You have to fill out an application for each one of the businesses. If you are lucky, you
can get an appointment for an interview right there. At the end of the day, the employers read
the applications to decide which applicants fulfill the requirements for the different positions.
Waiting for a phone call from them is the hardest thing each one of the applicants will have to do

AN ITALIAN CHEF AMONG TICOS
Tony is an Italian chef who came to Costa Rica in 1984. Since he arrived, Tony experienced very nice
moments while visiting his brother who lived here. This international chef said that when he was
riding a bus, he met a woman and they fell in love at first sight. Unfortunately, a few days after, he
needed to go back to New York, his previous hometown. Later, once back in Costa Rica, he opened a
restaurant that he named ‘’II Ponte Vecchio;’’ meanwhile, he got married to his loved sweetheart.
Tony explains that Costa Rica attracts him because he was born in a small Italian town that is similar
to the Costa Rican tow where he lives now.” This place is surrounded by nature and it is located right
next to the sea. People from this area are very kind,” he adds. In fact, he expresses that these two
facts are the main reasons that made him to decide staying in Costa Rica and considering this country
his home. When Tony looks back on the years he’s been in Costa Rica, he assures that Costa Ricans
have always treated him very kindly. He said that the best friends he has ever made are Costa Ricans.
“They have always made me feel at home, so it is really good to live in Costa Rica,” he concluded.
