My favourite music magazines

 1. 2.

I like this magazine cover because : -

The photography has been well thought out. The main medium shot has been set out in two layers. The two men in the background are over layered by the masthead and the main singer has been put on top of that, possibly showing the importance of the band member’s. Rest of the photos have been put at the bottom of the cover, which makes the main medium shot more important as it makes it easier to see. All the photos are posed, non are natural looking.

I like the layout of the magazine as well as it’s all busy there’s always something to look at, and show a lot about the magazine so you know exactly what the magazine is about.

Also I like the attitude it implies, it’s loud, likes to make a statement and is dark like rock and anything that associates with rock.

I think this magazine is aimed at all those who love rock/alternative/ indie music and are into going to gigs. People buy this magazine because it has a lot to offer just on the front cover, its also eye catching because of the simple colours, of red, black and white being the most used colours.

Circulation Figures

UK and Rol sales – 41, 856

Other Countries – 1, 397

Total – 43, 253

 2. 3.

I like this magazine because :-

The layout has been well thought out.

I like how they concentrate on one subject matter with the photography and the lead article which is big and clear.

They have used simple but effective colours to create this cover, The red and yellows make it loud and stand out. The black and whites make it formal and clear to read.

The black and white medium close-up used make them young and fresh and looks like an old photo contrasting back to the lead article of “kids again”

I like the attitude it brings out, they don’t make the magazine too informal but has a twist to it. Its loud, that it uses big bold typefaces and colours. It also contrasts with the style of music it advertises.

This magazine is aimed at probably the older adolescents to young adults, that are into the type of indie/ rock/ pop/ alternative music. It looks interesting and would want the reader to look inside because of its loud front cover.

Circulation Figures

UK and Rol sales – 36,942

Other Countries – 4,006

Total – 40,948

 3. 4.

I like this cover because : -

The photography influences with the mast head of the magazine and creates the effect of an explosion, which makes the cover interesting to look at.

I like how everything on the third left is in bigger typeface than it is on the right. This indicates the importance of what is in the magazine.

The layout is set around the image. Some type overlapping the image to make it seem more informal and more rebellious of a magazine than being formal. I like how even though things over lap they are still clear to see. The fonts are the right colour. Grey’s, whites and blacks used mainly.

The attitude and values of this magazine is to be bigger than any other magazine it has to stand out. Its explosive with the way that the masthead is cracked and special effected. It ranges it sizes from big to small a range of different importance's to what the magazine wants to advertise.

Although there is no circulation figures that I could find, this magazine would be a big seller because of the attitude it comes across and applies to all the magazine rules.

 4. 5.

I have chosen this magazine because I like : -

The layout of this cover is very simple. The is but only small print at the bottom. And few pull quotes to the right. This magazine doesn’t go with the ‘the third left’ rule as it is a big seller and dosn't need to use it.

The photography I like as well, It is a medium shot it is a full body shot which fills most the cover up. The natural coloured background behind, gives the group a more of a serious look, but with the use of pinks and white they have played around a bit showing that there not so serious. Unlike Mojo’s sister Q this is a bit more serious than that, it looks like it is for a more older audience.

I like how they have used instead of red like most magazines they have a chosen a more lighter colour and this goes well with the photograph. Some of the time face has been given a separate background so that it is clear.

The values of this magazine would be serious and more formal for the older of audiences. Although from other magazines I have seen this goes rebellious, because the un-natural colours that it has. Also the type people who would read this would by this because of its none loudness like most music magazines have, but this look chilling and not some jokey read. Also maybe older generation bands are included in the magazine.

Circulation Figures

UK and Rol sales – 55,724

Other Countries – 41,998

Total – 97,722

 5. 6.

This magazine I like because : -

Of the simplicity of it although I am not sure that it follows the concept of a magazine. There is no left third. This could suggest that it’s not much of a big seller.

The photography is dull and quite serious, with the darkness and shadows on the faces.

The orange and white makes it look bland. Also the same Ariel typeface been used all over.

Although there it does follow the masthead, slogo and skyline rule.

This magazine would be aimed at a more solitude audience, people with a indie style. It gives a harsh attitude because of the darkness of the photography and dark background.

 6. 7.

I like this magazine because : -

Of the photography, it’s a big picture but captures the beauty and gives attitude to the magazine. The artist is holding her head and looking straight at the camera, which gives it the attitude. The skin looks soft against the black. And also the white background makes it soft as well.

The blue and black contrast well together I like the colours used as they are simple and eye catching.

It applies to the left third although it has text on the other side, this may be because they aren’t so important.

The masthead is designed in an effected way with a slash diagonally down, this also shows the attitude of the magazine and that they are serious with what they do.

The skyline is big with a small photo overlapping the masthead which I like because it makes it more clear to see as you already know that the magazine is called ‘blender’ and the same has been done with the main image it brings it out more.

I like how some of the pull quotes have been highlighted with a background colour to them, so they don’t clash with what's behind.

I like how some of the text has been slanted and end with exclamation marks to show of the attitude.

This magazine would be sold to a rebellious, hard, ‘I don’t care what you thing’ attitude, because of the bleakness of the magazine which it represents a young fresh audience.

Although couldn’t find any circulation figures I would imagine that there are a quite few people who buy this, maybe a younger audience that aren’t serious but wants to read something with a big attitude towards what they do and there style of music.
