This document intends to assess the BIM implementation level in Portugal. It is hoped this dissertation contributes to a strategic planning towards the implementation of this technology in Portugal. Over this study are referred BIM technology use advantages that are most valuable to AEC players and the aspects considered most important by those towards methodology diffusion.
This dissertation is an extension of Venâncio (Venâncio 2015)’s study, a survey to several construction players which goal was to assess BIM methodology implementation level in Portugal.
The present study had as a goal to determine which benefits and aspects considered most important to increase BIM technology adoption and implementation in Portugal are considered to be more important to the surveyed companies and statistically validate the conclusions gleaned from the survey answers in order that they can be a base to the national strategy planning towards BIM methodology implementation.
It were made three statistics tests, the Spearman correlation coefficient, in order to quantify the association level between two variables, the Friedman test, with the aim of verify if one of the advantages differs from the others and the Fisher LSD test, to say which one differs after multiple comparison of the group variables and in that way statistically validate the conclusion that one advantage is more important than the other to the surveyed.
The statistical analysis was focused on the answers of architecture and engineering studios and public licensing entities groups. The motive for studying the answers of these groups was because they were the ones with the largest sample size, which allows a more solid and consistent analysis. They were also believed to be the most important groups to develop measures towards BIM adoption in the country.
The architecture and engineering group is where BIM implementation would be easier because they don’t depend on other stakeholders to do it and they are the ones that get more immediate and short term benefits.
The city councils group because it is the player that represents the building lifecycle stage immediately after the project phase and because they are also very big and important owners.
There is still little literature about the impact of BIM technology in civil construction industry in Portugal and so it is hoped this dissertation contributes with foundations to the development of a strategic planning to stimulate BIM methodology implementation in Portuguese AEC sector.
