During the professional practice module I used my time working alongside commercial pinball manufacturing companies to learn new skills and make valuable contacts for moving on with my project of building a pinball machine in my final year.

  6. 6.   Heighway Pinball 10/12/2014 Jono Sandilands - MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking, UWE, BristolEarly 2015  Mid 2016  Artist StatementMy aim as a visual artist and printmaker is to explore new technologies  which enable a participatory experience for the viewer. In past projects, this  has been achieved through interactivity and gameplay.   Having a solid knowledge, understanding and over 5 years experience  working as a graphic designer, along with both traditional and digital  printmaking techniques, my practice revolves print, physical objects and  materials around digital technology.    I am interested in how the two worlds of virtual and physical meet, contrast  and intertwine with one another  questioning our current use of technology  in order to create alternative methods of design and image making.   Project ProposalI am proposing two parts to this project 1) Work Experience and 2) Project  Development & Support. These parts may feed into each other for example;  what I find during the work experience element is expected to advise the  project work..    1) Work Experience The main aim here is to help in the manufacture of pinball machines and for  me to learn more about the different areas involved in the process by  working alongside Heighway Pinball for a set amount of time, with the  possibility for future employment.   I propose that time to be from January/February 2015 until May/June  2015, one or two days a week working at the factory in Merthyr Tydfil to  relieve pressure during busy times, to shadow different staff members in a  structured order to get an overview of their work, help out with different  tasks, build on skills and learn about manufacturing pinball machines with  Heighway Pinball.     2) Project Development & Support For my final MA project I am working towards building a pinball machine  that is a follow on from The Art of Ping Pong project. The machine is aiming  to be experimental with materials and technology. A huge part of this project  is to encourage more people to play Pinball.   The ambition is to create an interactive artwork using pinball as the medium   I’d say every pinball machine is a work of art  so the outcome is likely to  develop over the time of the project  it may be an idea or a theme, a  technique or material that is utelised in a new way.    With this there could be an interesting cross over with R&D projects at  Heighway Pinball allowing testing of future ideas for the company.    Following on from our meeting there is potential for support from Heighway  Pinball using your hardware, parts and expertise to allow me to build a  “flippable machine” which I can use to develop my project.    The timescale for this project is slightly under a year and a half from  January 2015  Mid 2016.  Examples of work The Art of Ping Pong 2012-present Video: http://vimeo.com/53467944    Combining sport, technology and creativity in a blend of colour and style, the Art of Ping Pong records players’ interactivity, creating real time pieces of artwork that are projected onto the table.    The generated image is printed and kept by the players, not only as a piece of art, but a visual record and memory of a game and experience that would otherwise be forgotten.   Lighten & Lyrical 2013 Collaboration  artist & textile designer Barbara Ridland. Part of Shetland International Textile Festival 2013.   Screenprinted paper sculptures inspired by the contrasts of light: in the sea, architecture and between different countries. Using DIY screenprint methods to bring together knitwear and printmaking, experimenting exposing a piece of knitwear directly to the screen.    I developed the semitransparent sculpture to include an interactive element using the Arduino platform. When the viewer is in close proximity to the piece it begins to communicate with them, by means of a LED, activated by a motion sensor to subtly pulse within the sculpture, making it glow  like a lighthouse or beaco PROPOSAL
