The document discusses distribution options for a proposed Latin music magazine. It considers distributing through newsagents, shops, and online like most magazines. The author proposes publishing with Time Inc., which publishes popular R&B magazines like Vibe, as they could benefit from expanding into Latin music. The magazine would be distributed monthly to provide enough new content each issue, and a subscription option would allow online access for readers with smartphones. However, the author notes many magazines are experiencing lower sales as technology enables getting free, illegal copies online.

Evaluating media distribution for a Latin music magazine
1. Evaluation 3
What kind of media institution might
distribute my magazine?
Jonathan Atehortua
2. What magazine publishing house might own my magazine?
Distribution
The magazine will be distributed by newsagents, corner shops, supermarkets just like
any other magazine being sold. The user will be able to see the front cover, flick a few
pages and buy it if they’re interested or put it down if not.
However I think I will also sell my magazine over the internet just how most magazines are
being sold today. This is simple because there is new technology being released like Apps
and due to this this there is a higher chance that people will cross over the app and
possible buy a copy of the magazine online
For my publishing house I probably choose ‘Time Inc’ mostly for the reason of it being
the publisher of the main selling R&B magazines today like ‘Vibe’.
Although this distributer doesn’t publish Spanish music if's based in America where
music like bachata and reggaeton have gained a lot of popularity causing a lot of people
to listen to it.
As a result to this I think for them to publish one a Latin music magazine can be a big
step but also be successful.
Although this is a magazine targeted more towards people that are Latin and already
know about the artists there will probably still be people who aren’t Latin or have a brief
understanding who want to learn more about the music that will buy the magazine.
Just because the magazine is targeted at a different audience doesn’t mean
other cant buy it and enjpy the content within.
I Could also consider another publishing house like ‘Harris Publications’ as it’s based in New York too
and publishes the Hip-Hop/R&B magazine XXL. Overall I believe this house leans more towards the
urban side of music like hip-hop than R&B so I’ll end up choosing Time Inc as the publishing house.
3. The main general convention for R&B/Hip-Hop magazines to
be released on a monthly basis. As a result to this I
conformed to this convention as I think that there will be
enough content monthly to inform the reader about.
How often will my magazine be circulated?
The reason I chose to conform to this because unlike pop
magazines that focus on gossip and reviews R&B focuses
on whatartists have been up to, fashion, new possible tracks, interviews
and more. As all of this piles up I think there will be enough
information here to please the user monthly.
Personally, I think it will be a great idea for my magazine to
be distributed by a subscription. Mainly because the
majority of the target audience have advanced technology
like androids and smart phones so they will be able to buy
the magazine through this instead of buying an actual
physical copy
Will it be available via subscription?
As you can see on my contents page I also included a
subscription section where the user can read what they
will gain by subscribing to the magazine for example,
exclusive content that they wouldn’t get by buying a single
copy of the magazine.
4. Sales
It was shown that ‘Vibe’ has a circulation of 300,943, of which 202,438 was paid for
however 98,508 out of the total weren’t paid for. Even though these are the statistics for an
R&B magazine similar things have been happening to other magazine like ‘Top of the
pops’, ‘XXL’ and much more.
I personally believe this is the fault of an advance of technology where people are able to
get illegal copies of magazines without having to pay so due to this sales have decreased
and it’s only going to get lower.
