Today OpenStack is a business driven Software, I hope it should be also a Free Software. Why and How: I'm going to explain it !

Speaker: Jonathan Le Lous is a Free Software professional and activist for 9 years in France. He's board member of April, association which promotes and defends Free Software in France, co-founder of French User OpenStack community, speaker and co-organizer of events. Also, he's cloud leader at Savoir-Faire Linux a Canadian company.

  • I am opening a can of worms here (meaning, I know I am causing long debate), but I believe that Openstack should remain under non-restrictive licensing. If, from the beginning, it was under GPL style operation, the businesses and and large resources brought in, would not exist. The exponential growth would not have occurred. Businesses are more friendly and find more benefits (for bad reasons sometimes) to bad-style, but it sure does grow interest and direction in a burgeoning project.

What I do agree with is that the community should assure that these companies do not take over in the long run, and that companies play fair. The community and code direction should have a healthy serving of 3rd party member direction. After talking with Sean, the current Openstack board lead and yahoo employee, I think Openstack currently has it right. Actually maybe a little more member slant. Right now it is 2/3 company and 1/3 member. I think members should have slightly more, but not half half.
