Consider how many workers now carry smart phones or notepad computers with them to work. You may be able to track their Internet use on their work computers, but how about their smart phones and notepads? The truth is that no matter how much money you spend on monitoring software, your employees will still have access to the Internet. • It doesn’t solve the problem of lack of employee productivity: Let’s assume that you’ve purchased some type of monitoring software. You’ve installed it, and you’ve gathered information about which employees are visiting which web sites during the workday. Now that you have that information, how will you use it? Will you admonish or discipline the employees that have wasted precious work time? And if you do, will that make them more productive? The fact is that if employees want to waste time during work hours, they will find a way to do so whether you monitor their Internet usage or not.The only real solution to making your employees more productive is to motivate them to do so.Tracking their Internet usage is obviously not the answer. Measuring their productivity andproviding them with good reasons to perform better at their jobs is the only real, permanentsolution. Rather than spending a lot of money on tracking software that won’t resolve the issue,find instead innovative software that helps you to measure each employee’s productivity. Afterthat, establish performance standards that each worker must meet, and provide incentives thatwill make them want to do a better job.
