Dental anesthesia interrupts the growth of wisdom teeth
1. Researchers have found a relation between the dental anesthesia and the eruption of
wisdom teeth in kids. The research was carried out by a team of researchers from
Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and has been published in The Journal
of the American Dental Association. Researchers found it to be quite intrigued that
local anesthesia considered as routine in dental care can stop the eruption of the
wisdom tooth. Researchers claimed it to be the first research where a relation was
drawn in a routinely administered clinical procedure and arrested third molar
growth.
Wisdom teeth are known to develop in late teens unlike other teeth that show an
early growth in human beings. Apart from that wisdom teeth are vulnerable to injury
due to their late development in the oral cavity. Its between the age of two and six
that wisdom teeth start developing at the back four corners of the oral cavity. Its not
necessary that each and every human being will develop these wisdom teeth. Those
who develop these wisdom teeth often face problems as these teeth are sometimes
impacted.
Nine out of ten people who develop wisdom teeth face a problem of impacted
wisdom teeth. The impacted wisdom teeth cause bad breath, pain and infection.
2. Thus it becomes necessary for a dentist attending on a person who has developed
wisdom teeth to remove them at once they start giving problems. The wisdom
teeth are removed with a surgical procedure which may sometimes be expensive
and time consuming as these teeth are located at the rear end of the mouth.
When the wisdom tooth is in the developmental phase it is called a bud and is
vulnerable to injury due to its small size. Moreover it is not covered by a bone
which makes it prone for a relatively longer time. The wisdom tooth during its
developmental phase is not more than the diameter of a surgical needle and is
quite close to where the needle is inserted to introduce the local anesthesia while
treating a patient for normal dental disorders.
Researchers at Tufts University conducted a study on a group of patients aged
between two and six and found that kids who had received local anesthesia had a
remote chance of developing wisdom teeth. The X-ray reports of these kids before
and after administering the local anesthesia was studied that gave ample of reason
for the researchers to infer the relation between local anesthesia and Wisdom
teeth. As of now researchers are exploring the probability of a larger sample size
and longer periods of observation to confirm their findings and help better
understand how wisdom teeth can be stopped from developing.
