Dr. Marianne LaFrance was one of the first psychologists who delved into the
topic of the first impressions made based on one’s hair. In her research, she
wanted to know if hairstyles can significantly change how people view a
person. She wanted to find out if there’s such a thing as hair impressions.
3. Here are the major findings of LaFrance’s study:
• Hairstyles can overpower whatever initial impressions made based on
the face alone. People even associate different hairstyles with certain
perceived personality traits.
• Any hairstyle can increase a woman’s perceived sexiness. However,
any hairstyle can lower a woman’s perceived intelligence.
• People see women with short hairstyles as confident and adventurous.
On the other hand, women with medium-length hair look smart and kind
to most people. Those with long locks, however, often appear the sexiest
and most affluent.
• Men with long hair look less well-off than his peers, but their hairstyles
also suggest that they are open-minded and outgoing.
• Men wearing short, clean hairstyles look the sexiest and most
confident.
• Men who wear the corporate, Wall-Street look (side-parted hair)
usually appear as the smartest and wealthiest in the room.
